The theme for the group project is: social justice. Students were encouraged to think of a number of important issues related to the theme and find compelling areas that are personally meaningful to them. In this cohort, students were encouraged to focus on needs from the Twin Ports community. We received support from Dr. Katre (Associate Professor, College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, World Languages and Cultures Department) and UMD Engage Office to develop the community connections.
"Throughout this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of how technology can be designed not simply for functionality or convenience, but to serve vulnerable communities with dignity and respect. "
"Speaking with people in the community gave us real insight into what was actually needed. That input shaped our design and kept us grounded in issues of the real world. It gave me the understanding that technology is strongest when it's shaped by the people most familiar with the problem."
"Overall, this has been an amazing experience that I believe made me a better developer. I came out of this experience a volunteer of Food Forward, collaborating with Dr. Aparna to make the application I had direct involvement with be used by people within our Duluth community ."
" Our project was about addressing lack of resources for homeless people in our county."
