Croeso i Dosbarth 8! Welcome to Year 2 at Cyfarthfa Park Primary. This year your class teacher is Mrs Walters and your LSA is Mr Butterfield.
We start our day at 8.45 when the main door open and end our day at 3.20.
Our PE day is a Tuesday, while the weather is on our side, PE will take place outdoors. Please send your child into school WEARING their PE kit.
Home Reading in Year 2 works a little differently to Year 1 . Children have a Home Reading Book that is expected to be brought to class every day for a reading session in the morning. Children take their reading books home every evening to practise at home. We change reading books every Tuesday and Friday. Please make a comment in your child's Reading Record to let us know how they did and if the book needs changing.
In Year 2 pupils are introduced to Google Classroom. Homework will be set via Google Classroom every Friday. Homework could be an Activity for you and your child to complete via Google Classroom or it may be that you will be asked to access a different online resource or it could be a practical task.... keep your eyes peeled on our Google Classroom feed for messages, photos and much more!
This year you will have access to our Weekly Spelling lists which you can practise at home. You do not need to hand this work in, have fun and use the resources as much as you like.
As always pupils are expected to bring in to school a water bottle and fruit daily.
All items need to be clearly labelled.
Outdoor learning remains important in Year 2 and so we would like for you to ensure your child has suitable outdoor clothing with them daily as the weather changes.
Shwmae pawb, Mrs Walters ydw i.
Over the last 11 years at Cyfrathfa Park Primary I have adored teaching in our Foundation department. It has been a joy to be part of so many pupils journey at our school and I have loved watching your little ones become confident, talented and caring individuals in KS2.
I am a mum to three, a passionate gardener, decorator, and occasional baker. But my all time favourite activity is reading and my favourite author is Sir Terry Pratchett.
One of my favourite subjects to teach is Mathematics. I love developing pupils confidence in exploring Maths using the CPA approach and seeing that lightbulb moment!
Our key concept is imagine.
Autumn Term 2026
Our key concept is time.
Spring Term 2027
Our key concept is dreams
Summer term 2027
This half term the focus will be numbers to 100.
Recognise, read and write numbers up to 100 and the corresponding number words and concrete representations.
Represent numbers as tens and ones in a place value chart.
Use a ‘comparing tens and then ones’ strategy to compare numbers to 100.
Add a 2-digit number and another 2 digit number with regrouping.
Subtract a 2 digit number from another 2 digit number with regrouping.
We will also be developing our wider Maths skills in our exploration of 2D and 3D shape and pattern..
We develop our understanding of numerical concepts using the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract approach. We enjoy discussing our ideas with our Maths partners, talking about what we can see in our Inspire Maths textbooks then demonstrating our understanding using equipment before moving on to recording activities in our books.
We apply our mathematical skills during our topic work involving real life contexts. We love exploring Mathematical ideas in our environment during outdoor learning and we are amazing at using our mathematical skills in Guided Play!
We Love Maths!
This half term during our Maths Meetings we will be revisiting some skills already taught to consolidate and reinforce knowledge, keeping those skills on the boil!
To count forwards and backwards within 20/100 crossing the tens.
To say one more and one less within 20/100.
Counting forwards and backwards in 2's. 5's and 10's.
Reading and writing numbers to 100 (ensuring teen numbers are understood e.g 15 not 50!)
Number bonds of 5/10.
This term our story is How the World was made. Every day we practise learning parts of the story using a text map and physical actions developed by our class. Every day we build on our knowledge of the story by learning the next sentence and over the term each individual becomes more confident at retelling the story orally.
We promote using Welsh at every opportunity in and around the school, see below for sentence structures we are working on so that you can practise at home.

In Year 2 we are working hard to help our pupils become independent, active learners. A vital part of your child's education lies in Free Play and Guided Play.
We work with the pupils to plan Guided Play challenges, every other week during Amser PIP, that promote application of skills that have been taught during Planned Play tasks..
