All K-4 music classes are forty minutes in length and meet once a week. PreK music classes are thirty minutes in length. Regardless of grade, students experience a variety of music activities, all tailored to address the National Core Arts Standards. These activities include singing, playing instruments, dancing, exploring expressive movement, improvising, and integrating with other subject areas. Students also experience a variety of music in different modes, meters, languages, and styles.
PK-4 students in Williston are building their music literacy skills through the First Steps in Music and Conversational Solfege frameworks. Conversational Solfege is a dynamic and captivating general music program that enables students to become independent musical thinkers with the help of a rich variety of folk and classical music. With the Conversational Solfege approach, music literacy starts with great literature and an "ear-before-eye" philosophy that correlates with the National Core Arts Standards. Great songs are broken down into their component parts and then reassembled so that students can bring greater musical understanding to everything they do. The ultimate goal is to create fully engaged, independent musicians who can hear, understand, read, write, compose, and improvise. First Steps in Music is the precursor to Conversational Solfege.
