What is the difference between formative and summative assessments?


Formative Assessments: During the learning process, students are just beginning to practice with new skills and content, so scores may be lower. The assessments teachers give during this time are meant to check for learning so that we can differentiate as needed, and give students some valuable feedback about learning along the way.

Summative Assessments: These assessments come at the end of a period of learning or unit, following a lot of practice and instruction. The summative, or final assessment, is carefully designed to provide the best evidence of a student’s learning.
