Swift House, a grade 5-8 team that is part of the upper house (middle school level) at the Williston Central School in Williston, Vermont, was formed in the school year 1990-91 as a response to planning sessions that were held beginning in 1988 to deal with projected rapid growth in school population in the town. In addition to planning for new facilities (a new wing would be added to the existing building during that same year) Swift House was designed as a pilot team to try new parameters to meet the needs for a 21st century education. The original teachers included Bernie Caron, Al Myers, Juliette Longchamp, Gary Howard, and Carter Smith (special educator). See our

"A field trip involves learning. If there is no learning, then it's not a field trip. It's a vacation!"
~Quote from Swift student Izacco Lozon
Swift House students go on a variety of field trips throughout the year. In the beginning of the year, we have our traditional Swift House Campout at Grand Isle State Park, and we end the year with a trip to Sandbar State Park to celebrate our graduating 8th graders. Additional class field trips are scheduled throughout the year for smaller groups of students within our team.
End of the year, multi-day field trips are traditionally open to any 5th-8th grader in Swift House. These students complete a research project, which they begin in February, for a June open house. The field trip sites act as a final resource for these student projects. Past field trips include Washington D.C., New York City, Mount Washington and Boston. Students who do not attend the out of state field trip will have Home Team activities and daytime field trips during the same week back in Vermont!
