This year in 7th Grade English Language Arts we will also be following the Common Core State Standards. Within these standards we cover Reading, Writing, and Speaking/Listening skills. That information can also be found in the link above.
As part of our ELA class, we will be dabble in the forms of narrative, informational, and argumentative writing. Students will practice their writing skills by crafting a memoir, a historical narrative, and a poetry notebook, among other writing assessments that we’ll work with throughout the year. We will also be reading in our 7th grade literature book and doing novel studies, including the novels Crispin and The Cay.
There is a reading requirement in the 7th grade to read 20 Accelerated Reader Points per quarter. Example of point values: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for 12 points, Hunger Games for 15 points, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid for 3 points. The goal is for students to be reading, and reading a lot! I thoroughly agree with Dr. Seuss when he said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
