What kind of shoes do I need?
Running shoes are unique to each runners foot. It is a good idea to go to a local running store (Inside Track, Appalachian Running Co, Fleet Feet) in order to find the shoe that fits your foot the best. Running shoes should be replaced every 300-500 miles depending on the runner and shoe.
Do I need spikes to race?
While spikes will not make you fast, they can help you to run faster. If you hope to be a competitive runner, it is a good idea to have a pair of spikes to race in.
How do I earn a varsity letter?
The top 7 runners in a cross country race are the varsity team. Each athlete hoping to earn a varsity letter will need to be in the top 7 for at least 40% of the races.
What is the best way to hydrate and refuel?
In distance running, we burn a lot of calories and sweat a lot. It is very important to drink a lot of water but also to drink electrolytes. Eat plenty of protein, healthy fats, carbohydrates, and fruits/ vegetables. If you are not properly fueling your body, your body will break down and not perform at its best.
How do the coaches communicate with athletes?
We use an app called GroupMe. Team members are expected to check their GroupMe messages for important updates relating to practice or meets changes. Athletes are expected to be responsible and communicate this information with their parents for transportation purposes.
