Response to FAQ/Concerns

Statement: The teacher should contact you to inform you of your child's grades.

Resolve: Pending your child's course I may not be able to due to FERPA; I will make all grades that I can available and be available to discuss progress. Parents are able to access all of their child's grades as posted online using the Teacher Access system CHS provides. Parent's should register access for themselves and their child to have access to posted grades by contacting the front office. Once posted, grades can be viewed by parents or students at their convenience.

Statement: Students stand to benefit from instruction in various forms regardless if variation is needed.

Resolve: Yes; Students have various learning styles that may change depending on the subject matter being covered. Though it may not help a student to experience topics through differentiation of instruction, it doesn't harm their understanding. It may also optimize a students understanding by providing a means for them to explain concepts to others and further their understanding of material.

Statement: Students are responsible for learning information covered in class.

Resolve: Yes; Students that embark on a more challenging learning experience accept the responsibility of learning their content. Properly prioritizing their time, limiting their distractions, seeking proper assistance when needed, and holding themselves accountable is for the student. Parents, teachers, and administration are there to help, and provide guidance for facilitating student success.

Statement: Tutorials are to re-teach material covered in class.

Resolve: No; Students are taught in the classroom and provided the opportunity to apply learned concepts, understand personal pitfalls through their application, and correct or pinpoint areas that are of concern. Questions should be asked or annotated for review later in tutorials to better the current understanding of concepts taught in class. Tutorials are also a place to study, review, or gain more confidence in the area of study. If a student is not responsible in class, they won't be able to have a progressive tutorial experience.

Statement: It is the teacher's responsibility to inform you when your child is performing poorly.

Resolve: No; In addition to having access to the Teacher Access network provided by the district for parent's convenience, students should take personal accountability for their performance in the classroom and keep their parents informed proactively. Though the conversation may be difficult, the best way to get the needed assistance is for the parent to be informed that there is a problem, or help is needed, as quickly as possible. As this is a personal responsibility, students are the fastest line to providing their parents with this information. I will do my best to inform parents, but it would be much more efficient for the conversation to be had between students and parents as soon as uncertainties arise.

The last three letters in ChemisTRY is all I expect of my students. I'll do everything that I can to help them continue to make progress. The only thing I ask in return is for them to not make excuses.
