EXPLORATION
Development of coupled geological and geophysical techniques (measuring magnetic fields and electromagnetic induction) and remote sensing technologies (including aerial photography, satellite based spectroscopes) have increased the rate of identification of mineral and energy resources and improved estimates of their size and value prior to extraction.
MINING AND EXTRACTION OF MINERAL RESOURCES
Decisions about whether to and how to extract a resource depends on the value, location and volume of the resource. Consultation and negotiation with local and indigenous communities are required to further assess the impacts on and costs to the environment and community of removing the resource.
In the past, mineral deposits have been easy to discover because of evidence for their presenceĀ was visible at the surface e.g. placer deposits therefore panning for gold in river beds.
Today we find deposits deeper underground because of new technologies.
Western Australia we have only mined about 3-4% of the total landmass.
There are three fundamental stages for exploring for mineral deposits;
Area selection.
Data gathering.
Evaluation.
