Good attendance is critical to your child's success in school. Please help ensure that they arrive at school, on time every day. It is important to plan family trips and outings during scheduled time off, not on a school day. If your child must miss a day of school, please call the school office and let us know. Thank you!

When leaving a voicemail state:

• Your student’s full name
• Teacher’s name and Room #
• Date(s) of absence
• The reason for the absence
• Your name and relationship to the child

Illness Please do NOT send your child to school if:

• a fever is present (even if medication brings down your child's temperature) A child should not attend school until he/she is without a fever for 24 hours.
• vomiting or severe diarrhea are present.
• cold/flu symptoms are severe enough that your child appears highly contagious or too miserable to learn.

Independent Study Independent study contracts are highly discouraged in kindergarten. There is no way we can provide you with the materials to make up for the learning that is missed when your child is absent. Please schedule family vacations around our school calendar.

If your child must miss 5 school days in a row, you may request an independent study contract in the office. Contracts should be requested at least 10 days in advance. The guidelines state that your child must complete about 5 hours of school work for each day they miss. If you request a contract, your child is expected to complete it and return it to the classroom teacher on the day he/she returns to school. INDEPENDENT STUDY BOARD POLICY

Completing an Independent Study Contract

When on an independent study contract your child is expected to complete five hours of school work each day and return it to school on the day of his/her return. Please complete and log the following activities for each day of the independent study.

Daily tasks:

• Read to your child. Discuss the story or text including characters, setting, beginning, middle, end, key information. (Look at the Fab Four Friends under reading and writing resources to help with this.)
• Listen to your child read. See reading and writing resources for a link to leveled reading materials.
• Help your child write about your trip. (1-2 sentences for the first trimester , 3+ sentences for the second trimester and 5+ sentences for the third trimester.)
• More reading and writing Complete any dittos attached to the independent study. Then look at reading and writing resources for other activities. Please log the activities you choose and the time you spend completing them. (See Kindergarten Benchmarks to see what skills we focus on each trimester.)
• Math Complete any dittos attached to the independent study. Then look at math resources for other activities. Please log the activities you choose and the time you spend completing them.

**Please record your activities and time spent on them on the daily log attached to the independent study. Remember the time logged each day should total five hours. Thank you!
