Q: What is the best way to help my child?
A: The best way to help your child is to keep them accountable!
Have them check Aeries every day and check in with them to see how school is going.
Make sure that they complete their asynchronous (Independent Practice /HW) work on the days we do not meet together.
Check their notebooks to see if they completed all of the core problems (Group Practice) during the synchronous class lessons.
Also, maybe take some time with them to organize their binders/backpack every once in a while.
Q: Do I need to "relearn" the math in order to help them on HW?
A: NO!
It is not your job to teach them math. You already went through school it is their turn.
If they are struggling:
– There are homework help links next to every problem on the online textbook.
– They use the internet almost every day. Tell them to figure it out. There are so many resources online that can help them: YouTube, Khan Academy, etc.
– Tell them to come visit me during office hours at the end of each school day on DL.
– Have them ask a classmate. They use social media all the time to communicate with classmates, it's about time they did it for something aside from gossip!
Q: How often are checks?
A: Assessments (or checks) will happen often under a standards based system. Small checks (what we are calling assessments) will happen almost every week and sometimes twice a week. Each of these small checks will only be 1-2 questions that target a specific standard. The playlist will show each day that a check is scheduled. Bigger checks (similar to former chapter tests) will occur at the end of each chapter/unit. These assessments will be longer (5-7 questions) but will be reported back with a rubric grade for each standard that is on the test.
Q: Are you available to help my child if they are struggling?
A: Yes! Students are always welcome to message me or see me for any assistance. I can be found in my room around 8:15 each morning and directly after school most days except Wednesdays (teacher collaboration). I also can be found during most lunches.
Q: For Accelerated and Integrated Classes: What does my child have to do in order to continue on the advanced pathway?
A: For Accelerated Math 7 we have looked at a B letter grade at the end of each semester (January and June report cards). For Integrated class, the decision is ultimately up to CVHS. Students passing with a grade of C and above have all generally moved onto Integrated II in 9th grade.
