Hand-shuffling mahjong pieces is time consuming, inefficient, and could be messy. The only existing, alternative solution would be to buy a large mahjong shuffling table which is bulky and expensive.
Mahjong was first played in the 1800s in China. It's a four-player game of strategy, skill, and luck played with 144 tiles that are based on Chinese characters and symbols.
Mahjong Club has shown interest in a cheaper, lighter, and less space-consuming model.
Ryan Yee, co-founder of our Mahjong club at CVHS, noticed that many of the tiles fall on the ground while shuffling causing damage to the pieces. Other officers in the Mahjong club at CVHS have justified this occurring problem in their club meets, where shuffling pieces is time consuming and inefficient.
We sent out an informational survey to our community to gauge the interest in our idea of creating a portable mahjong shuffler.
With a high demographic of mahjong players in our community on campus, we felt the need to design a efficient shuffler model for those players to make playing mahjong more efficient and fun!
When asked where they have played mahjong, these were some of the responses.
How much time do you spend playing mahjong, and when you do play?
When asked what some of the problems they encountered while playing mahjong.
Overall, people really liked the idea of having a portable mahjong shuffler !
