Absences
Students are expected to be in virtual school EVERY day unless there is a valid reason for an absence. There are only six acceptable causes of absence(s):
Student illness and/or medical appointments (note must be provided for medical appts)
Death in the immediate family
Family emergency with Approval from Principal
Observation of religious holidays
Circumstances which cause reasonable concern to the parent or legal guardian for the safety or health of the student
Other situations beyond the control of the student are determined by the principal or the principal's designee, on a case-by-case basis, including, but not limited to homelessness and its attendant difficulties.
Every day a student is absent from school a parent/guardian must verify the absence within 48 hours. An unverified absence is considered unexcused after the 48 hour period. Absences due to illness that are more than 3 days should be verified by a doctor's note or the 4th day will be considered unexcused. Please remember your student must be fever free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school. Note: After 10 excused illness absences during the course of the school year, you will be required to submit a doctor's note for all future illness absences. Please call our attendance clerk on the first day of a child's absence (510-537-9558, ext. “4860"). A parent note may also be used. Absences without a parent note or phone call will be considered unexcused. Regular and punctual school attendance is critical to a student’s academic success. Even if you notify the teacher of an absence you MUST still notify the attendance office. The teacher will not report the absence for you.
Tardies
Students must arrive at their zoom meeting and to all classes on time. Students are tardy if they are not in their virtual classrooms at the start times designated in the schedule above.
Asynchronous Work Engagement
Teachers will maintain either written or computer-based evidence of student engagement. This includes but is not limited to a grade book or summary document for each class that lists all assignments, assessments and associated grades. Families of students who demonstrate a record of disengagement will meet with the principal to come up with a re-engagement plan.
Progress Monitoring:
School staff that directly support the student including teacher, counselor, and administrator, shall ensure that procedures for tiered reengagement strategies are used if your student does not generate attendance for more than three school days or 60 percent of the instructional days in a school week, or who are in violation of their written agreement. The procedures shall include, but are not necessarily limited to, all of the following: (Education Code 51747) 1) Verification of current contact information for each enrolled student; 2) Notification to parents/guardians of lack of participation within one school day of the absence or lack of participation; 3) A plan for outreach from the school to determine student needs, including connection with health and social services as necessary; and 4) A clear standard for requiring a student-parent-educator conference to review a student's written agreement and reconsider the independent study program's impact on the student's achievement and well-being.
