Sierra Hills Education Center (SHEC) is an independent study school for grades K-12. SHEC received a 6-year WASC accreditation in 2023. The school employs teachers who work out of three locations in the district, at our main San Andreas campus and our satellite classrooms at Valley Springs Elementary and West Point Elementary.
Our San Andreas campus is open four days a week for students to visit and complete classwork with teacher support and access to technology. Independent learners enjoy flexible seating and the small, nurturing environment, working at their own pace and schedule. Students may utilize district transportation and receive free lunch. Workshops and counseling sessions are also offered.
Students in this home-based instructional program work independently, using district adopted textbooks and FlexPoint toward their high school diploma or other appropriate educational goals dependent on grade level. Students may take a-g courses online for UC/CSU eligibility. SHEC students and/or guardian enter into a contract with their teacher to meet weekly and receive assignments and instruction.
Students may have a blended schedule with classes at Gold Strike or Calaveras High Schools. Student athletes can be enrolled in independent study at SHEC and still participate in CHS athletics.
