Wow! I can't believe it! I am starting my 18th year teaching here at CMS! Time certainly flies when you are in 6th grade! Here is a little bit of information about me, so you can get to know me better. :) I was born in Holland, but I speak German, not Dutch (my mother and many of my relatives are German). We lived in Germany, Holland, and Belgium when I was young. Students always want to know which countries I have traveled to, so here they are: I have traveled to Czechsolovakia (now the Czech Republic), Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Wales, Ireland, England (the U.K.), Holland, and Belgium. Even after we moved to the United States, I traveled with my family to Germany every summer for 8 weeks. My parents LOVED to travel, so we traveled A LOT! :)
Strongly influenced by my German background and the cultural ties I have with Germany, I majored in German in college--I have a B.A. in German Studies from Mills College, a private women's college, in Oakland. I worked for various computer companies (including SGI, back in its heyday--when they owned the Googleplex), before returning to school to become a teacher (some of my family members are teachers, and my grandmother most influenced me to pursue teaching).
My husband & I have 1 riddogulously cute dogson, Brownie, and my favorite thing in the world is to spend time with my family, preferably at the beach, and to hike, do yoga, bake (I am famous for my brownies) craft (I could spend hours at a time in Michael's), decorate, go antiquing, and, of course, read! :) I also help to organize the school spelling bee every year. I participated in a spelling bee when I was in 6th grade, and that has always been a great memory for me, even though I didn't win the bee!
My husband and I are Giants fans, and many of our family members like the Green Bay Packers, so we often root for them! The sport we are most interested in is golf, and some of my favorite players are Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson (because they are lefties, like me--well, Phil is, sort of!), Luke Donald, Vijay Singh, Martin Kaymer, Rory McIlroy, and, of course, the unforgettable Bobby Jones! What I like about all of these golfers is, besides being great golfers, they all show excellent sportsmanship and are role models--on and off the green. A great lesson for me! :)
