Beginning Band Assignments

Use Bandmate or a tuner to play in tune. Make sure every note is the correct note and is in tune.

SCALES and LONG TONES - P. 37, all 4 major scales. Play one scale all in whole notes (quarter notes = 60 bpm) every day. Play as many notes in one breath as you can.

• BRASS, play lower notes if there is a choice, untiI test on the scales. If the low notes are all correct, play higher notes.
• WOODWINDS and MALLETS, play both high and low scales if there is a choice (learn low notes first).

Practice p. 21 - 23. Learn and practice chromatic scale at bottom of p. 37. Our low brass sectional teacher recommends learning five notes at a time, memorizing those five notes until you really know them, then continuing on, five notes at a time, until you know the whole scale.

Mustang Band Assignments

Scales & Long Tones: Memorize F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db concert scales and chromatic scale. If those scales are easy for you, add one new scale at a time (review each scale every day, even if you already know it). Play one scale all in whole notes (quarter notes = 60 bpm) every day. Play as many notes in one breath as you can.

Advanced Band Assignments

Scales & Long Tones: Play all 12 major scales (F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb/F#, B, E, A, D, G, C concert) scales and chromatic scale. If you do not know them by memory, play one different scale by memory every day, until you know all 12.

If you know all the majors and chromatic by memory, learn the minor scales (natural, harmonic, melodic, jazz melodic).

Play one scale, ascending only, 8 beats per note every day. Play at least two notes in one breath (three, if you can).

Play "Songs in 12 Keys," at least one different page every day. Play the scale of the key signature of the page.

Listen to and Practice: Dances of Innocence, Mulan, Amparito Roca, At Morning's First Light, Fa Una Canzona, Evermore, "Songs in 12 Keys" (two pages or more a day - then play the scale which goes with the key signature of the page).
