Important Messages

Please watch @FariaFalcons for quick messages from Mrs. Enright

Hello Faria Families,

The month of May brings many celebrations and sharing of gratitude for the heroic effort to support students this year. I would like to express my appreciation of our parents. This year, all parents took on extra responsibilities to support students as they learned at home with the rigorous curriculum and high expectations from our Faria staff. Beyond this, our volunteers have been working remotely to support our students and classrooms. This includes Room Parents, FEEF Board members, School Site Council members, and many other volunteers.

Our Room Parents organized virtual events around special holidays and they also took on an extra role to provide an important bridge between the school and families. I appreciate the extra time they took to meet with me and share their perspectives.

Faria’s Educational Enrichment Foundation has done a spectacular job to provide many virtual opportunities for children, such as Coding, Bombay Jam Dance, Spelling Bee, Game Night, Yearbook, and Math Enrichment. Thanks to many parents who helped make those activities possible.

I would like to recognize some of our volunteers who are parents of fifth graders. They have been active for many years supporting our school in a variety of ways: Divya Suneeth, Mahipal Saran, Revathy Srinivasan, Nidhi Jaiswal, and Kevin Eggleston.

Mahi and Divya have been active in supporting our annual Spelling and Geography Bees for several years. Additionally, Mahi took the lead for incentives and snacks for the Walkaround in years past. Divya has also taken the lead as the technical expert for FEEF, and she is always willing to help at school. No job is too big or too small for the two of them.

Revathy took on several roles through the years and always brings creative ideas to her many volunteer roles. She organized several special events for the staff, and she pulled together an amazing team of volunteers to develop and implement a virtual Bingo Game.

Nidhi Jaswal has been an instrumental part of school life for several years. She has taken on many responsibilities including the Room Parent Coordinator, the Yearbook lead, and this year she helps organize Bombay Jam Dance, and the many math enrichment opportunities. Nidhi is a close partner with Srividhya Venkat, the FEEF president, and she looks for any way that she can support the children at Faria.

Kevin Eggleston has served for many years on the Faria School Site Council. His keen eye provides quantitative data to measure our successes and areas for improvement. Kevin’s other important legacy is our Walking School Bus. Kevin took the bull by the horns and worked to alleviate our traffic challenges by organizing an option for families to park conveniently and walk to school safely. Kevin’s efforts will live for many years to come.

With heartfelt appreciation,

Mary Enright, Principal

Phase 3 Updates

For those families with in-person learners, please remember that our parking lot is for staff only. Do NOT park in the parking lot. You are welcome to park in the neighborhood if you would like to walk your child onto campus. Or, if you prefer to stay in your car, you may use the drive through drop off/pick up line for students in grades 1 - 5.

If you are walking on to campus to drop off or pick up your child, stay on the sidewalk and wait in the Parent Waiting Zone. For everyone’s safety, do not walk through or gather in the parking lot.

Phase 3 Hybrid Learning - Transitions

April brings many changes as we move into our Hybrid learning phases. We value everyone’s patience as we move to new Google meet times, and all other changes to our schedules. Our first transitional week focussed on safe entry and exit to campus and some tests of our network. The students and staff did an excellent job completing a fire drill with safe distancing. Overall, the students seemed very excited to be back on campus. A big thank you to several parent volunteers who helped with the campus setup, and also for FEEF’s support of the balloons to welcome back our in-person students. Also, we appreciate our distance learning families as they have some slightly unusual schedules this week as the staff needed to attend some specific training for our in-person students. We will continue to work together as a whole community whether learning in-person or online to serve all students social-emotional and academic needs.

Schedules:

April 12-16: Spring Break - Enjoy some time off to relax, get outside, and enjoy the spring weather. Remember to stay safe and continue to follow CDC guidelines to help keep our community healthy.

April 19-23:

  • Students in grades 1-5 attending in person will come to school two days from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm.

  • Grades 1-3 will only come on Monday (4/19) and Tuesday (4/20).

  • Grades 4 and 5 will come either on Monday (4/19) and Tuesday (4/20) OR Thursday (4/22) and Friday (4/23), depending on their group assignment.

  • Kindergarten will continue with the schedule they started this week (8:30 am - 11:20 am) and attend on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

April 26 - June 8:

  • All in-person students will attend on campus four days per week: Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays, and Fridays. Arrival and dismissal times will not change. (K: 8:30-11:20 am, 1st-5th: 8:30 am - 1:30 pm).

Thank you for arriving on time for drop off and pick up. Students should arrive before 8:30 am, but no earlier than 8:15 am, and be picked up promptly at their dismissal time.

Requests to Change from In-Person to Online Learning

If you would like to switch your child from in-person learning to online learning only for the remainder of the school year, please complete this form.

Attendance Information for In-Person Students

Dear Faria Families,

As we kick off Phase 3, we want to remind you of some important attendance information for our in-person learners:

  • If you selected in-person learning, it is expected that your child will always attend in-person on their designated days.

  • Students must be in their waiting area (grades K-2) or their classroom (grades 3-5) by 8:30 am. Plan to arrive on campus between 8:15 and 8:25 so that your student has time to get to their designated waiting area/classroom before 8:30 am.

Absences:

  • Please remember to do a symptom self check with your child. If your child is experiencing any symptoms, stay home and complete the absence form.

  • If your child is able to attend online while experiencing symptoms, their absence will be excused. Our staff will follow up with you to discuss when your child may return to campus.

  • Failure to attend in-person for other reasons without a valid excuse will be recorded as an unexcused absence.

Late Arrivals (Delays/Tardies):

  • If you arrive late, you must park in the neighborhood (Do NOT park in the parking lot) and walk your child to the main gate at the front of the school (near the office).

  • Call the office (408-252-0706) and one of our staff members will assist you.

  • Your child will be marked late.

Please remember to report absences by 8:30 am each day that your child will be absent.

Online Absence Reporting Form

We appreciate your continued efforts to stay safe, perform symptom self checks, and follow all District COVID guidelines.

Sincerely,

Mary Alarid-Enright

Dear Families,

I am reaching out today to remind families to be sure to complete the linked Parent Selection Form (Survey #2) by December 18, 2020, at 5 PM. This is the final commitment survey. The number of students in each model is imperative in order to plan for the staffing of both options.

We must receive a parent selection form for every student.

We will continue to work towards a Phase 3 advancement which includes collecting information from families and staff regarding Phase 3 needs (part of Metric 2). Once a selection has been made, if a family wishes to change their choice, we will do everything possible to make adjustments, but at this time cannot make any guarantees.

We will not open in Phase 3 until all of the re-opening metrics are met. METRICS LINK

From the previous survey, we know that the level of community spread and the county tier is very important to our community. Please take time to review the metrics that will be met before we declare an official shift to Phase 3.

We will be having a Principal’s Coffee on Thursday, December 17th at 9:00 a.m. where I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Thank you to those who attended the Principal’s Coffee this week. We will have another session in December so that we can meet together as a community.

I want to remind families that the initial survey to determine what type of learning environment they prefer for their child when in-person/on-campus instruction resumes is due by Monday, November 16, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. You will be asked to complete the survey once for each child enrolled in a CUSD school. This is not a commitment, more information will be shared before you make that decision for your family. Check your email for a message from Cupertino Union School District for additional information and the link to the survey.

For our families celebrating Diwali, I hope that the warmth and splendor that are a part of this occasion fill your home with happiness and bright cheer.

Dear Faria Parents,

Thank you to those who were able to join the CUSD Budget discussion last night with Jeff Bowman (CUSD Chief Operations Officer), Lori Cunningham and Phyllis Vogel (CUSD Board Trustees), and Dan Halabe (Community member). The panel shared important information about the state of the CUSD budget, including background information and what YOU can do to support CUSD schools.

In CUSD, there is a continued desire to provide high-quality programs for all students, equity across schools, stability for staff, increased site budgets, and more. As you will see explained in the attached slides and presentation, CUSD is low-funded across the board. We are low-funded relative to the state and nation, to our district neighbors, and to what is considered adequate.

We are funded by the state up to a minimal limit, but local funding from parcel taxes, bond measures, and your contributions to FEEF and CUSD are the levers where we have the most control. We are asking for a donation of $275 to support FEEF’s contribution to the running of Faria. This year this includes:

  • $400 per classroom for various expenses;

  • A paid day for our teachers before school started to prepare for distance learning;

  • Support for our Instructional Aides that not only support students in small groups but also help the teachers prepare the materials for your use at home in distance learning;

  • Support for our School Site Technology Specialist so that teachers technology issues can be addressed promptly to minimize issues during our classroom meetings;

  • Support for extra software licenses that teachers have requested to support your student’s learning like Dreambox in 1st grade, MobyMax in many grades and SpellingCity in several grades;

  • Support for some potentially needed technology upgrades for this spring so that we can have a solid testing environment for state testing;

  • Many more enrichment programs, and

  • Grants for teachers’ professional development

I will be having a Virtual Lunch with the Principal this Friday, October 23rd, where we can continue this discussion. Look for details at the Faria Distance Learning Hub.

If you were unable to attend the discussion last night, there are links here so that you can watch the recorded session as well as some other important links.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Mary Enright

Principal, Faria Elementary

Goal Setting Conferences

Dear Faria Families,

We typically meet with families in the fall to discuss progress, share goals, and set the stage for learning for the next few months. This year, we met briefly with you at the start of the year and our upcoming conferences will be an opportunity to add onto our first conversations.

Teachers will schedule times for conferences with families between October 19th and November 20th. Because we have no minimum days this year, students’ afternoon Google Meets may be replaced with asynchronous assignments in order to accommodate the conference schedule. Schedules may vary day to day and may differ from classroom to classroom, but we hope that flexibility and the extended conference window minimizes conflicts. As always, if you have concerns with your scheduled day and time, please contact your teacher.

We look forward to engaging with you again to discuss your child’s goals and progress.

Sincerely,

Mary Enright

Principal

Influenza Information from CUSD Nurses

Dear Faria Falcon,

We hope this message finds you and your family safe and healthy. The nursing team

within Student Health Services at CUSD is closely monitoring data and public health

guidance related to the current COVID-19 pandemic. As we approach the fall and winter

months, a significant concern in the healthcare community is how influenza, also known

as the flu, may impact or stress the healthcare system, which is already strained due to

COVID-19.

The flu shares many symptoms with COVID-19 and, as a result, may be impossible to

differentiate based solely on symptoms. In order to avoid unnecessary visits to

healthcare facilities for flu illness, Public Health is strongly advising community

members to get a flu vaccine. Flu vaccines are recommended for ages 6 months and

older and can be obtained at your primary healthcare provider’s office, Santa Clara

County of Public Health , or at several local pharmacies, such as Rite Aid, Walgreens,

and CVS.

Please take a moment to review the attached flu information and reach out to Janice

Leier, RN: leier_janice@cusdk8.org with any questions.

We really do believe CUSD has the best, most involved staff and parent community and

we truly appreciate your willingness to help us keep our community safe.

Community Update - August 7th

A message from CUPERTINO UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT

Dear CUSD Community,

The start of the 2020-2021 school year at the Cupertino Union School District is now less than a week away, with students returning to class next Thursday, August 13, 2020. As we shared last week, all CUSD schools will begin the new year in a full Distance Learning model.

We are very grateful to parents, teachers, staff, students, and community members for your engagement over the summer in preparing for this unprecedented first day of school. The input and collaboration you have provided throughout the process during Board Meetings, at Town Hall Meetings, via surveys, during collaborative discussions with our labor organizations, and in a variety of other ways has been critical as we received State and County updates and built our plans for schools to begin next week. Our primary consideration has been and will continue to be the health and safety of our students and staff as we work to ensure all students have access to a full, high-quality curriculum.

We will continue to follow the school guidance of the California Department of Public Health and Cal-OSHA and strive to achieve the metrics that all schools and county public health officials must use to determine whether to reopen schools with in-person instruction. (For reference, please review CDPH's COVID-19 Industry Guidance document dated July 17, 2020.) Our strong desire is to have teachers and students back on campus; but until these metrics are met, we will remain in Distance Learning. In consideration of this, as well as the need for all stakeholders in our community to plan and prepare, our Board of Trustees agreed during the July 30th Board meeting that we will remain in Distance Learning through the first semester, until January 8, 2021. We will work vigorously during the fall months to implement the public health requirements and prepare for reopening via our Four-Phase approach. To keep you informed, we will continue to send out e-mail communication regularly to our community, and we encourage your participation in our bi-weekly board meetings.

This week every CUSD parent should have received an Annual Opening Day Packet via parent email for each child. Review and submission are required of all CUSD parents, and we ask families to sign and submit all parts of this document as soon as possible but no later than the first day of school, August 13, 2020. Please contact your school site secretaries if you did not receive your child’s Annual Opening Day Packet.

We recognize that there are many unknowns and much unfamiliarity as we embark on this new school year. Though the first day of school will look very different from any we have experienced in the past, your principal and teachers will guide you and your students through this important kick-off. Early next week, your principals will reach out to your school community and provide details about daily schedules, class placements or schedules, technology support if devices are needed at home, material pick-up procedures, and general expectations related to daily attendance. When you have questions, we also encourage you to reference the Fall 2020 Reopening of Schools FAQ, a living document that we will continue to update as necessary.

CUSD teachers and principals are all passionate and professional educators, supported by staff committed to the well-being of our students. We have been preparing throughout the summer to provide support to all students’ social, emotional, and academic needs through a mix of synchronous (live teaching) and asynchronous (independent) learning experiences coupled with multiple weekly opportunities for small groups or one-on-one support. Students will be expected to engage in learning every day, with expectations aligning with the core standards, and assessments helping teachers better support student learning. These components mimic a typical school day of in-person instruction. We ask for your close partnership, collaboration, and grace in implementing this new scenario and meeting the needs of each child. Please work closely with your classroom teachers, principals, and school counselors to help your own child get the new school year off to a good start.

We look forward to starting our 2020-2021 school year next Thursday, August 13. We hope you enjoy your final week of the summer break!

District Announcement of Distance Learning for the Fall and information about the Opening Day Packet

A message from CUPERTINO UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT

August 3, 2020 12:04 p.m. by email to all CUSD families

Dear CUSD Families and Community,

Thank you for your continued support as we near the opening of CUSD for the 2020-2021 school year. We are very grateful for your engagement, providing input throughout the process at Board Meetings, Town Hall Meetings, and in a variety of other ways. The input and collaboration received from staff and community have been critical as we receive State and County updates and build our plans for schools to begin on August 13, 2020.

We look forward to starting our 2020-2021 school year on August 13 by providing students a quality education, promoting in all students academic excellence, social growth, and responsible decision making.

We continue to follow the school guidance as established by the California Department of Public Health in addition to the metrics that all schools (public and private) and county public health officials must use to determine whether to reopen schools with in-person instruction. As we have shared in our bi-weekly communication at each Board Meeting throughout the summer, although our strong desire is to have teachers and students back on campus, until these metrics are met, we will remain in Distance Learning. We must implement these requirements through our Four-Phase approach to reopening. For more information, we have attached the school guidance document. https://files.covid19.ca.gov/pdf/guidance-schools.pdf

During the CUSD Board meeting on July 30th, the Board continued to support the plan that all CUSD schools will begin the new year in a distance learning model, and this decision is supported by the new guidelines outlined by the State. In addition, the Board members agreed we will remain in Distance Learning through the first semester, until January 8, 2021. This plan allows for many things that have been expressed by our community (students, staff, and parents):

  • Structured daily and weekly schedules for students

  • A robust distance learning program

  • Engaging remote learning content

  • Consistency of program, school, and teacher

  • Opportunities to build community in the school community where a student attends

  • Adherence to the health and safety guidelines required by the County and State

Our staff has been preparing throughout the summer to provide support to all students’ social, emotional, and academic needs through a mix of synchronous (live teaching) and asynchronous (independent) learning experiences coupled with multiple weekly opportunities for small groups or one-on-one support. Students will be expected to engage in learning every day, with expectations aligning with the core standards, and student assessments helping teachers better support student learning. These components mimic what a typical school day of in-person instruction

Before the first day of school, Principals will reach out to their community and provide details about daily schedules, class placements or schedules, technology support if devices are needed at home, material pick-up procedures, and general expectations related to daily attendance. In the next few days, you will also receive the Annual Opening Day Packet via parent email. Review and submission are required of all CUSD parents, and we ask families to sign and submit all parts of this document before the first day of school, August 13, 2020.

We will continue to hold Town Hall Meetings for community members to hear updates and ask questions.

CANCELLED - PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR MORE FUTURE MEETINGS.

Our next Town Hall Meeting for the Community is Tuesday, August 4, 2020, from 4:15-5:15 PM.
