Kennedy Gardens School Counseling Program


The school counselor supports the development of the whole child by focusing on three domains:

  • Academic

  • Social/Emotional

  • College/Career

TIER 1Classroom lessons (core curriculum) topics may include:
  • Worry
  • Emotional Regulation/Coping skills
  • Growth mindset
  • Responsibility
  • Empathy
  • Working in groups
  • Post secondary planning


TIER 2Small group counseling topics may include:
  • Social skills
  • Divorce/family changes
  • Study skills and goal planning
  • Attendance
  • Study skills/academic focus
  • College/Career readiness

TIER 3Short- term individual counseling topics may include:
  • Emotional regulation
  • Executive Functioning
  • Grief
  • Conflict resolution/friendship
  • Behavior
  • Worries/sadness/loneliness/ self-esteem
  • Divorce/family changes
  • academic struggles/goal planning

Delivery of services reach every child by beginning at Tier 1 with a core counseling curriculum, implementing Tier 2 group counseling for students who need more support and Tier 3 for students with intense needs (provided through 1:1 short term counseling and referral to outside resources).

The ASCA National Model guides school counselors in the development of school counseling programs that:

  • are based on data-informed decision making

  • are delivered to all students systematically

  • include a developmentally appropriate curriculum focused on the mindsets and behaviors all students need for postsecondary readiness and success

  • close achievement and opportunity gaps

  • result in improved student achievement, attendance and discipline
