In the summer of 2004, before the start of the 2004-2005 school year, the Westmont Chapter of Operation Snow was established. Westmont Operation Snowball is one of over 70 accredited programs, mostly located in Illinois. Our mentor program was the Naperville OS program. After recruiting several teens and adults to staff the first ever Snowflake and Snowball weekends to be held in February of 2005, planning began in earnest. To promote the Operation Snowflake and Snowball retreats, several events were held throughout the fall at both the junior high and high schools.
The Snowflake retreat in early February 2005 was the first-ever Snow retreat of any kind held by Westmont Operation Snow programs. A week later, Westmont held its first-ever Operation Snowball retreat. Both weekends were incredible successes, and launched momentum for our program. A couple of years later, we added Snowflurry to our program, which is held for fourth and fifth graders in CUSD 201.
Snow retreats were held annually from the 2004-05 through 2009-10 school years for each version of Snowball, Snowflake, and Snowflurry.
Beginning with the 2010-11 school year, demand to participate in Snowball was so great that we began hosting two Snowball retreats. The already established annual November retreat became our Fall retreat, and the first ever Spring retreat was held in mid-May, 2011. For Spring 2012, the weekend was moved to the third weekend of March, then the following year it was moved one more time up to the second weekend of March, where it has remained since.
From the establishment of our program through the 2018-19 school year, we have held 25 Snowball retreats, the most recent being the Fall 2019 weekend. Unfortunately, the Spring 2020 retreat was postponed and ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, in 2019-20, we hosted our 16th Snowflake retreat at Camp Manitoqua in February 2020, as well as our annual Snowflurry retreat at WJHS in February 2020.
