Dual Language Immersion (DLI), also known as Two-Way Immersion, is designed to provide both majority (in this case native English speakers) and minority (native speakers of a target language, in this case Spanish) students with an academically challenging learning environment that promotes biliteracy and positive cross-cultural attitudes in our increasingly multilingual world.
This is accomplished by providing instruction of the core content in two different languages (ex. Spanish/English), studying each topic routinely in one language.
They do not repeat the same content in both languages.
Classrooms include a balanced integration of English learners/Emergent Bilinguals (Spanish native speakers), native English speakers, and some bilingual speakers.
Students in each group serve as language models for the other.
