The spring sports have just began, and Carmel is blazing across the finish line. So far there have been two meets for Carmel Middle School, and Carmel has found its spot as #1 consecutively. The Opening meet was a relay meet, consisting only of relays and additional relays that you dont typically see in a standard meet; the sprinting medially which consisted of the 100m 1st leg, 100m 2nd led, 200m 3rd leg, and the 400m 4th leg. The distance medially consisted of the 400m 1st leg, 800m 2nd leg, 1200m 3rd leg, and a 1600m (mile), 4th leg. The second meet was a standard meet held at Carmel Middle School. Carmel found itself ontop of the leader boards at most events that followed at the meet. Unfortunately this meet was cut short due to the dying light, cutting off the 200m and the 4x400m events. Hopefully at the next meet, which takes place at Stevenson, we will see the 8th grade boys 4x400m truly preform.
At the season Opener Track meet, held at Palma Middle School. Carmel did outstanding, especially one relay team for the 4x400m. The team consisting of George Shillinger 1st leg, Gavin Braint 2nd leg, Jaden x 3rd leg, and Henry Bartle 4th leg, broke the school record by running a school record time of 4:00. This record is soon to be broken again as this dominant team head to stevenson highschool along with the rest of Carmel, to shatter and place above their competitors.

Following up with our CMS golf team, starting off the season with total domination on the golf course. Our team has won every match so far, against San Banancio, Palma, and Buena Vista. Our top scorer Channing Ash, taking first in every match, with his most recent score of 23 points against Buena Vista. We even have a new coach, Ethan Sipple, who rigorously pushes the team to perfect their techniques. They'll need all the practice they can get since these next matches will be tough, especially with the championship coming up in May! Wish them luck as their next match will be against Santa Catalina at Carmel Valley Ranch, April 9!

Cheerleading is a fun sport we offer here at the middle school. They perform routines, dances, and stunts. They will perform at our school gatherings every month, and in winter, they participate at basketball games. They perform during halftime, quarters, and they chant different cheers during the game. They also perform at open house, for the incoming 6th graders and other outside events like Laguna Seca, Big Sur Marathon, and Christmas Gift Wrapping. Earlier in March, they even went to perform at Disneyland! Most students involved with cheerleading say that the experience is very fun! At camp over the past summer, the team chose their captains, Liv Anderson and Claire Brogden! According to Liv, the best part about being captain is supporting others, representing and leading the team, and getting to be a part of something great. Meanwhile Claire said that her favorite part is the people, teaching the 6th graders, and watching everyone improve. Cheerleading is an amazing program here at the middle school, and we hope to see you there next year!

Tennis is played in schools all over the world. But, what is Carmel Middle School Tennis like? The varsity team had their first game on May 25th at Santa Catalina and sadly lost. But they did not give up because at their next game at Pacific Grove High School the junior and varsity teams put up a fight and almost won. Despite the two let downs they do not stop practicing. The varsity team has practice Monday and Wednesday for 2 hours each. The junior varsity team practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 2 hours a week. The varsity starts off their practice by having one of the tennis players leading the stretching around two laps around one of the courts.
Then the coach usually picks partners for everyone and they begin to pass the ball to each other for about 30-40 minutes. They then start practicing games with their partners against another group of partners for about 1 hour. Lastly, they play games all together to help improve their aim. The junior varsity team does similar practices
“I think middle school tennis is less stressful than tennis outside of school and it’s a really fun experience and I learn a lot in fun ways.”
-Estela Tejada (on varsity tennis team)

The wrestling season is closing, but there has been an excellent turnout for this sport this year! The CMS wrestling team has participated in many meets and tournaments. Many of them hosted in the Carmel Middle School gym. “I think practices are fun, and definetly a workout,” remarked an 8th grader who would prefer to remain anonymous, when he was interviewed. During practices the players work on strength building and strategy. Another 8th grader who spoke on the terms of anonymity, explained that there is a lot of strategy to wrestling. The team has spent a lot of time learning moves and techniques. Good job wrestlers!
