The Renaissance Fair has had its place at CMS for a long time. But there were plenty of ideas that didn’t last. In fact, there is a dark side to the Renaissance Fair. Mr. Stadille used to lead a torture area during the event. Kids in the Drama class would stand in costume and in character nearby, while Mr. Stadille would welcome them in with his malicious smile. He remembers all the signs decorated in fake blood and creepy halloween decorations. The torture area started out simple, but eventually became a two-story experience. Kids would get in a box behind bars, and would get hosed down. Mr. Stadille even said they threw a mixture of vegetables at the kids! This torture event might be fun… For some. However, some parents began to complain about the sanitary issues of the game, which is why the torture department was cancelled for good at our beloved fair.

Though the Renaissance Fair always seems to bring joy to kids there were a few times where it was especially difficult to put together. Ms. Carr shared about a few things that have previously made it more challenging to run:
Windy Weather
There have been many times where the weather has gotten in the way of the fair. Some of the most awful times the Renaissance Fair got interrupted was because of wind. This would make it harder for setup. One year, it was so windy that the 7th graders had to reset their tables, crafts, and games!
MBOE
One year, these fun 7th grade field trips were the very week before the fair! This left little time for them to prepare.
Pneumonia
Ms. Carr is very dedicated to the Renaissance Fair. That’s why, one year, when she was diagnosed with walking pneumonia the day before the fair, she still ran it!
Preschool visitors
Some years, Ms. Carr brought her preschool daughter to the fair, and dressed her up to be prepared, of course.
According to Ms. Carr, this is one of the most unique crafts the Renaissance Fair has seen yet! What will there be this year?
Though it has been through a lot, it is clear that CMS cherishes the Renaissance Fair. In a way, it gets the school together celebrating the end of the school year. As an eighth grader, I feel grateful for this last fun event with the whole school. We are all excited for this year’s Renaissance Fair where great crafts, food, services and facts are expected.
There will not be a torture chamber though…
