At Duncan Forbes we feel it is vital that we share our learning journey with families so that they know and can support the learning which is taking place in school.
We have a number of ways in which we do this, both planned for and incidental.
Termly Overviews
A termly overview is sent home by week 3 of each term to inform families what the pupils will be focussing on for learning that term.
The first page details each curricular area with specific information relating to knowledge and skills which will be taught.
The second page provide suggestions of homelink activities which can be done to support the learning further at home.

Learning Profiles
Why Profile?
At Duncan Forbes Primary, we are committed to developing our pupils as individual learners. As a result, throughout their entire time at Duncan Forbes Primary, from Nursery to P7, our pupils will maintain a profile of their learning. This will show evidence of them as a developing learner and the standards they are working at and towards.
Why share this with parents?
By sharing this with you and discussing it with your child, you will know exactly where your child is as a learner and they will be encouraged to reflect on their work. We value the partnership with parents and we know that by having you included it will have a greater impact for your child.
Our Personal Pupil Profiles
The first profile you will see at Duncan Forbes is a Learning Journey in Nursery 3 and 4. Throughout their time in Nursery, pupils and staff will regularly update the Learning Journey with observations linked to key development milestones and early level experiences and outcomes. Parents will have the opportunity to add to these with their own observations and comments. Learning Journeys are kept at the entrance to the Nursery and are available at any time. In addition to their Learning Journey’s, pupils in the nursery will share Focus Child Sheets regularly from Planning In The Moment. The engagement of parents before and after the focus is essential to show the holistic learning experience at this crucial stage in their development.
When your child starts in Primary One they will begin to collate more information for their Personal Pupil Profile which will follow them through every primary stage. The first section will be a simple Learning Journey which is updated every year with personal information. Here, pupils will also be able to think about targets and next steps for themselves throughout the year. This will be updated in class.
Throughout an academic year pupils will reflect on their learning through fortnightly Learning Profiles allowing them to evaluate on their progress and share this regularly with their family.
What is a Learning Profile?
In Primary 1 and 2 our Learning Profiles are called ‘Moo News’ and offer a simple structure to share literacy, numeracy and other learning which the child has participated in in school. Parents are encouraged to respond to their child’s comments and make links at home to the learning which has taken place.
In Primary 3, 4 and 5 our learning Profiles are called ‘Forbes’ Feedback’, they offer a more detailed reflection on the learning which has taken place again with the option of a comment from home to continue the learning and make connections.
In Primary 6 and 7 the pupils maintain a Digital Profile supported by the 1:1 devices for all pupils. We are currently using Bookcreator to structure our digital profiles, however, as the pupils become more proficient in using technology we may develop this further to google sites and/or other platforms.
Voyages of Discovery
The main section will be made up of Duncan Forbes Voyages of Discovery: My Key Assessment Task (KAT) which will demonstrate your child’s learning and are sent home to be shared with parents Throughout a session KATs are sent home for literacy, for numeracy and 2 further areas chosen by the class teacher. Therefore, over an academic year, your child will have a selection of Learning Snapshots sent home.
What is in the Duncan Forbes Voyage of Discovery: My Key Assessment Task (KAT)?
There will be general information - name, date, curricular area, focus experience and outcome and benchmarks of learning. There will be a short description of the context of learning and then a list of success criteria which the sample of work was assessed against. The pupil and teacher will have assessed the work, commented on it and identified next steps before it is sent home for parental comment.
The work which the KAT relates to will be attached in whichever form is most appropriate – for example, piece of written work, a sample from jotter work, a photograph or a link to a google document. Throughout the year, there will be a variety of assessment techniques used to reflect the wide range of teaching and learning experiences offered within Duncan Forbes.
When KATs are sent home, we request that parents discuss the learning with their child, write a comment and then return it to school for inclusion in their Personal Pupil Profile.
Skills Tracker
We are currently developing a skills tracker linked to the Meta-skills Progression Framework from Skills Development Scotland. We hope to have this in place during this session.
Wider Learning
In addition to the Learning Journey and the KATs, there is a section for children to include their wider learning and achievements in and out of school. Children will have regular opportunities to add to this through discussion in circle time and through home-link activities sent home.
We make celebrating wider achievements part of our assembly time every week so please continue to send your child in with any awards/certificates/medals which they gain out of school. Keep an eye on Instagram and X for ongoing celebration of successes for our pupils.
Bonus Information
Finally there is a space to keep any bonus information such as the personal notes to and from your child given at parents’ nights, relevant exit passes used in class and anything else which helps to build a picture of themselves as a learner and leading their own learning.
Transition of Information
The Personal Pupil Profiles will move through school with the child. If they happen to leave Duncan Forbes Primary during their primary years, their profile will be passed on to the next school.
Reporting to Parents
At Duncan Forbes, there is one annual Parent Appointment in November and one Summative Report sent home with the Personal Pupil Profile in June. Please remember however, that we have an open door policy. A parent can contact the school at any time to request an update meeting, telephone conversation or written report. Please don’t feel that you must only receive the formally arranged reporting information. As a staff we value partnerships with parents and believe that regular updates and meetings can be more informative than a scheduled 10 minute appointment during Parents’ night.
