I grew up in an Air Force family, moving seven times in six different states with my mom, dad, and older brother before graduating from Lake Braddock Secondary School in northern Virginia. I attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, graduating in five years with two undergraduate degrees, a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music (voice emphasis). I received my teaching credential from San Jose State University while teaching as an intern at Leigh High School. Since joining the Leigh staff in 2002, I've taught seven courses: English 1, English 2, AP English Language and Composition, French 1, French 2, Drama, and AVID. I coached the Leigh Mock Trial team from 2002 to 2018. I am currently the coordinator for Leigh's accreditation process known as WASC.
I believe that students should be given as many opportunities as possible to demonstrate their mastery of new learning. Because of this, my students are often able/required to submit multiple drafts of writing assignments until they've shown proficiency in the target skill(s). I use a standards-based grading system and a 4-point scale that better helps students to achieve mastery than the traditional 100-point system. Over the past several years, my professional development focus has been learning how to best provide appropriate support to special education students and English learners while engaging all students in a rigorous curriculum that feels authentically applicable to their lives and prepares them for future coursework and life beyond high school.
Teaching in Silicon Valley, it's important that students understand how to use technology as a learning tool. My classes regularly use Chromebooks and various apps, and a recurring question in my classes is, "What is the appropriate use of technology in this situation?" I became a certified Google Educator in 2015.
Outside of work I enjoy being active outdoors. In 2007 I started mountaineering and canyoneering, and I've climbed eight of California's fifteen "fourteeners," mountains over 14,000 feet high. Canyoneering involves descending narrow canyons by rappelling, climbing, and jumping into pools of water. I love the Southwest, not only because of its many beautiful slot canyons, but because of its stark beauty, so that's my favorite place to go on a road trip (great for stargazing, too!). I served as a National Park ranger for two summers in Chaco Culture National Historical Park in northwest New Mexico. I also enjoy playing with my dog, watching movies, and occasionally bingeing shows online.
