Patrick Yanni has been the Director of Bands at Southwest High School since 2013. He earned his Bachelor's in Music Education degree from San Diego State University. While attending SDSU Mr. Yanni studied conducting with Dr. Shannon Kitelinger and Matthew Rowe. He also performed with a wide array of ensembles at SDSU including the Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, the Jazz Ensemble, The Marching Aztecs, and a variety chamber ensembles and jazz combos. Before he started teaching at Southwest, Mr. Yanni was a Teaching Artist with the San Diego Youth Symphony’s Community Opus Project. He was also an assistant music director at Patrick Henry High School, Eastlake High School, and Grant Middle School. Mr. Yanni is becoming an in demand conductor and has been invited to conduct Jr. High and High School Honor Bands. He is also currently the President of the Imperial Valley Music Educator's Association.
Mr. Yanni is also an accomplished trombonist. From 2011-2013 Mr. Yanni was a trombonist for the San Diego City Ballet Orchestra, playing Principal Trombone for the 2012-13 season. Mr. Yanni has also performed with some of the most prestigious music ensembles in San Diego, including the La Jolla Symphony, the San Diego Musical Theater Orchestra, the San Diego Symphony, and Westwind Brass. Mr. Yanni is currently the Principal Trombonist of the Imperial Valley Symphony and the lead trombone player for Jimmie Cannon’s Valley Jazz.
