New research now published in PLOS One!
Quantifying relevant behavioral mechanisms has relied on rigorous, time-consuming tools restricted to laboratory settings and inaccessible to the clinical community. Advances in technology provide an opportunity to develop more accessible platforms. Here, we developed CALM-IT, a novel mobile-application to experimentally assess inhibitory control in vivo. First, we provide evidence that our novel inhibitory control mobile application, CALM-IT, was accessible, feasible, and engaging. Second, we found performance was reliable over time. Third, we found CALM-IT performance was associated with established measures of inhibitory control and activation in the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus. Associations with brain but not behavior survived after controlling for age. Finally, we found evidence linking impaired CALM-IT performance to increased levels of co-occurring anxiety, irritability, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms. Validation of this neuroscience-informed mobile application represents a critical first step in bridging precise, mechanism-driven research and community-based assessment of childhood psychopathology. The present work lays the groundwork for future research that could provide researchers and clinicians with a multifaceted tool to measure clinically-relevant behaviors in an engaging and accessible manner.

2024 Congress on Pediatric Irritability and Dysregulation
This Semptember LAND presented our work at the 6th Congress on Pediatric Irritability and Dysregulation Burlington, VT! So proud of our fantastic students and their contributions to our understanding of mechanisms underlying the development of irritability and associated disruptive behaviors!
LAND 2nd year PhD student Jennifer Meigs presented her line of research leveraging technology to probe mechanisms underlying the association between poor sleep and irritability.
Shannon Shaughnessy presented LAND's collaborative work with University of Miami's CAB Lab developing a novel paradigm to probe the impact of frustration on inhibitory control.
LAND 1st year PhD student Madison Schulte presenting her work examining associations between predicted emotional consequences of anger-eliciting statements and irritability
The whole LAND team sends a big congratulations to our amazing PhD student Jen Meigs for completing the prestigious Summer Intership Prograph (SIP) at the National Institute of Health where she worked with Dr. Melissa Brotman and Dr. Lauren Henry on leveraging large language models for systematic reviews and meta-analyses of EMA literature. We are so proud of you Jen!
We are so excited to announce that Madison Schulte will be joining LAND in Fall of 2024 as our newest clinical PhD student! Madison joins us from William & Mary where she completed her MS in Experimental Psychology working with Dr. Madelyn Labella in the RISE lab. Madison research uses psychophysiological methods to probe self-regulation skills particularly across development.
We are THRILLED to have Madison join the LAND team! Keep an eye out for Madison's contributions to our new psychophysiology research program!

New research now published in Psychological Science!
Many youth experience clinically significant psychiatric symptoms or disorders, and reported rates are on the rise. A growing body of research highlights the co-occurrence of clinical problems in youth, suggesting that different symptoms or disorders may have common pathways. Here we investigated inhibitory control, the ability to inhibit a reactive response to engage in goal-directed behavior, as one putative pathway. We used a statistical technique, structural equation modeling, to combine data from multiple laboratory tasks assessing inhibitory control and three common symptom types in youth: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, and irritability. We found that poorer inhibitory control was associated with greater symptoms across all three types, rather than any one type. Inhibitory control was also linked to young people’s increased efficiency of information processing in a specific brain network, a frontoparietal control network. Thus, inhibitory control linked to brain function may be an important predictor of symptom co-occurrence in youth.
