Report:
The Departments of Physics and Chemistry organized a Faculty Development Programme on April 5, 2023. Dr. Dhanraj Ganapathy, Professor and Head, Department of Prosthodontics, Saveetha Dental College and Hospital explained about the importance of higher education and enumerated various avenues for pursuing it. The challenges of developing chemical sensors and biosensors for environmental monitoring was addressed by Dr. Ashok K. Sundramoorthy, Professor, Department of Prosthodontics. Dr. P. Sivaperumal, Chief Scientist & Assistant Professor, Department of Prosthodontics explained the recent trends in Marine natural product, its chemical structure and the medicinal value.

The session highlighted the opportunities to pursue higher studies. The resource person listed the colleges with Post Graduate courses. Dr. Sangeetha enumerated various competitive exams that are conducted to recruit candidates in government sector. The students were also enlightened with the importance of setting a goal in life and to work hard towards achieving it. Nearly 23 students benefitted by the session.

The National Mathematics Day & National Science Day celebration was organized by the Department of Sciences from the Chevalier T. Thomas Elizabeth College for Women in association with National Council for Science & Technology Communication, Dept. of Science and Technology, Govt. of India and Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology, Govt. of Tamilnadu on February 14 and 15,2023. The TNSCST, Government of Tamilnadu, sanctioned a grant of Rs. 1 Lakh towards Mathematics Day and Science Day Celebration with which the Department of sciences organized a rally, exhibitions, workshops and competitions.
Dr. R. Srinivasan, Member Secretary, Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology was the Keynote Speaker. In his Keynote speech, Dr. Srinivasan exhorted the students to approach the study of sciences with an open mind and not think of it as ‘difficult’. He emphasised that Mathematics Day and Science Day was celebrated with pomp and splendor in order to make the students understand the role of Indian scientists in the development of science and technology in India. He then enumerated the possible careers that the students can pursue.
Shri N S Chidambaram, editor of Arivial Oli Magazine, enthused the students to identify and enquire about every intertwining aspect of life and science.
Dr. K V Balasubramanian, retired meteorologist, writer, and translator, showed that language was not important in the understanding and expression of science.
Dr C. Shanmugam, scientist and Sri T R Jothilingam, a science enthusiast and a retired Superintendent from the Railways, were present on stage. The Vice Principal Dr. R Meenakshi welcomed the gathering. The Managing Trustee and Correspondent Thiru L Palamalai delivered the Presidential Address and Dr. S Sridevi, Principal offered her felicitations on the event. Mrs. Sangeetha, System Analyst, Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology, who liaised the event with the College, was also present for the inauguration.
The celebration began with a rally from the College to the Madhavaram High Road by the students of CTTE College. The exhibition on Weather Disaster and its Management was inaugurated by Dr.R.Srinivasan, Member Secretary, TNSCST. The highlights of the exhibits included IoT based disaster alert system, weather station, earth quake model, wind resistant buildings etc. Around 180 students from 14 different schools of North Chennai displayed their innovative ideas through the models that they had constructed. The students of the College also exhibited their perspectives on the role of science and technology in the sustainable development of the country. On the same day a workshopon “Fun with Science” was organized by Dr C. Shanmugam demonstrating the concepts like chemilumine scence, Bernoulli’s principle etc. The workshop on “Fascination of Magic Square” involving playing with numbers conducted by Thiru.T.R.Jothilingam, Retd. Railway station Superintendent, fascinated the students. At the end of the session students were able to multiply large numbers using their fingers.
On the second day, there were competitions such as painting, quiz and poster making. Nearly 100 students from schools in and around Perambur participated in the competitions. Workshops were conducted on Electronics and Robotics and Geogebra-Digital Tool for the students. The workshop on ‘Electronics and Robotics’ conducted by Mr.Rajamanickam, a leading industrialist, focused on the working of sensors and oriented the students on IoT projects. The exhibition on “Technology of the Future” and “The Power of Psychological Wellbeing” were also organized. The two days’ celebration came to an end with the Valedictory session in which Dr. T. V. Venkateswaran, Scientist-F, Vigyan Prasar, DST was the chief guest. In his valedictory address, he emphasized the need to go beyond the textbooks and imbibe the knowledge from all the spheres of life. Dr. Venkateswaran motivated the students to develop interest towards the science subjects through stories and simple activities. Prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners and participants by the Chief Guest. The organizers extended their heartfelt thanks to TNSCST for facilitating and supporting with financial assistance the conduct of the National Mathematics Day & National Science Day celebrations.

Objective:
To explore visual aspects of nature through the art and science of Photography.

Students captured the scientific phenomena happening around us and explained the concept behind it. The photos were taken inside the campus. The tyndall effect of sunlight through window slits, golden ratio in plants, pigmentation in leaves, the apparent weight loss in lift, surface tension in water drops etc., were captured by the participants.

Schneider Electric India Pvt.Ltd is a leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation.The exposure visit was arranged to bring awareness about BIS activities, Standards fformulation, quality of products, RCCB(Residual Current Circuit Breaker) and MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) among students. The visit started with a warm welcome by technical officers followed by the presentation about the company, its vision, mission, job opportunities by Mr. Stalin, GM Operations of Schneider Electric India Pvt. Ltd. The senior trainer Mr. Rahim Pasha briefed on the process of quality checking of raw materials and the assembling of these raw materials into final product by automatic system. The company manufactures quality products of RCCB and MCB.
The students were educated about the Bureau of Indian Standards, its structure, certification marks which include Agmark, BIS Hallmark, Eco mark, FSSAI, Non – Polluting Vehicle mark etc. BIS CARE aapplication was also introduced to the students for verifying the quality of the products. The exposure visit was very useful and gave a real time experience for the students.

The students and the faculty members of the Department of Physics visited India Tourism and Industrial Trade Fair held at Island Ground, Chennai on January 28,2023. The first year students of the Department exhibited a model of satellite communication system. The process of launching and placing the satellite in a proper orbit using multistage rocket attracted the public. The visitors of the stall were also curious to know the controlling of satellite operations from earth stations. The model was exhibited in the Government KalviThurai stall. The students also gained knowledge from the models exhibited by the other city colleges.

As the world is facing a severe energy crisis, there is a never-ending demand for efficient devices to save money and reduce the emissions leading to climate changes. In this regard, the Department of Physics in collaboration with the Centre for Student Development (EDC and IIC) of Chevalier T.Thomas Elizabeth College for Women organized a Skill Development Workshop on making of LED bulb on December 22,2022. Mrs.S.Shyamala, the Proprietor of My M N Sons,Chennai enlightened the budding entrepreneurs with startup ideas. The technical session was handled by Mrs.M. RahmathSulthana and Mr.M.Md.Khaleelulla. At the end of the session students were able to make LED bulbs and understood strategies to reduce electricity consumption at home. 30 students from the Departments of Physics,Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science and Computer Applications got benefited from the training workshop.

In order to expose the students to the application of quantum mechanics in quantum computers, Department of Physics, organized a lecture on “Importance of Quantum Mechanics in daily life on October 7, 2022. The resource person for the day Dr.K.Ekambaram, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Physics Kanchi Shri Krishna College of Arts and Science, Kanchipuram, briefly outlined the time line of quantum mechanics from its origin in the twentieth century to quantum entanglement which was awarded Nobel Prize 2022. An attempt was also made to outline the applications of quantum mechanics in computer chips that drive desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, even small household appliances and kids' toys. The application of quantum mechanics in sensing of Earth’s magnetic field by birds using cryptochromes aroused curiosity among the students. Dr.R. Meenakshi, the Head of the Department expressed gratitude for presenting the vast concept of quantum mechanics in an encapsuled form that was easily understandable by the students

Dr. R.Sribalan, the Director of the research lab outlined the objectives of the project. The students were grouped into two and allowed to synthesize the material chosen for their study. During the second session, the students gained knowledge on the quantitative analysis of the experimental data. The day provided a fruitful experience which aroused the curiosity and creativity among the students enabling them to think and act like scientists by designing experiments, leading to new findings. Dr.R.Meenakshi, the Head of the Department motivated the students to apply science and technology to develop innovative solutions for sustainable growth.

The students of the Departments of Basic Science visited the 3D Sound and Light show organized by the Govt. of Tamilnadu at Kalaivanar Arangam. The videos depicting the sacrifices of Kodi Katha Kumaran, Velu Nachiyar, Subramania Bharathi and other great freedom fighters motivated the young minds. Thulasi.D, III B.Sc Physics , in her feedback to the media reinforced the duty of the present generation to pay gratitude and utilize the freedom in the right way.

Objective:
To provide an insight into the real working environment of the industry.
6 students and a faculty from the Department of Physics visited Parle-G biscuit production unit at Madhavaram, Chennai on July 15, 2022. The students were accompanied by the facilitator inside the plant. They had an opportunity to explore the working environment in the factory. The various process carried out starting from the incoming of raw material, making of dough, baking, cooling, segregation and packing of the final product created a different experience for the students. The safety, hygiene and quality check performed at each stage made the students to realise the importance of how the food materials are processed. The facilitator described the diversified functions of the company in a nutshell. Students also interacted to know the history of the company and the variety of products made by them.

This monument houses many paintings. The beautiful and extensive painting gallery which spoke about the important epics/people in all major religions attracted the students. Students performed dhyana in the meditation hall where Swami Viviekananda had stayed. The audio-visual presentation on the life of Swami Vivekananda was enjoyed by the students.

Students interacted with the officials and gathered details about the storage capacity and the role played by the reservoirs to meet the water requirement of the state.
