The Valedictory function of Physics Association “Radiations” was held on April 3, 2021 through Google Meet. A renowned alumna of the Department, Ms. Shiji.I. Pulikkottil, currently working as Assistant General Manager, BSNL, Tamilnadu Circle, was the guest of honour. The resource person in her valedictory address stressed the importance of having a vision, as the student enters a world of unlimited options, after having graduated in a world of structured education. Mrs. K.P. Nalini, Association Secretary presented the annual report of the Association activities for the academic year 2020-2021. The prize winners of the various competitions were also acknowledged on the occasion. Students of the Departments of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics attended the session.
On March 23, 2021 a virtual Career Guidance Programme was organised to acquaint the students with various competitive exams and career opportunities open for Physics graduates. Dr.D.Shyamala, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, D.G. Vaishnav College was the guest of honour for the occasion.

As a part of the National Science Day Celebration, a National Symposium on Recent Advances in Materials Science was organised on Feb 27, 2021.The Symposium aimed at creating awareness about the significance of Materials Science in daily life and to update the recent developments in the field of advanced materials that paved the way for technological growth.
The first session of the symposium handled by Dr. K. Ilangovan, Associate Professor (Rtd), Department of Physics, RKM Vivekananda College, Mylapore, recalled the roots of the technology that has pushed the frontiers of knowledge at unprecedented rates. The major revolutions of Physics in twentieth century-Classical mechanics, Quantum mechanics and Relativity were highlighted in the talk. Dr. K. Raja, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Sri Subramanya Swamy Government Arts College, Tiruttani in his talk on “Application of Nanotechnology in Daily Life”, opened up the use of nanomaterials to improve the performance in various fields ranging from medical diagnostic and therapeutic devices, textiles, household appliances communication technologies, sports equipment, cosmetics etc. The third session by Dr. S Ramakanth, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Physics, Satavahana University, Telangana, focused on the emergence of ferroelectrics as a promising material for future photovoltaic applications. The structural and optical properties were discussed in the session. Dr.S. Pradeep, Research Associate Department of Physics Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi in his last session outlined the various techniques for growing crystals with focus on Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition.
C.T.T.E College has been registered as a centre for conducting National Graduate Physics Examination. National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE) is a voluntary Examination conducted by the Indian Association of Physics teachers every year in the month of January throughout India for Graduate students studying Physics. This examination provides an opportunity for an individual Physics student to sharpen his hold on the subject and to assess the same at all India level. NGPE 2021 was held on 24th January, 2021. 11 students from the host college and 24 students from outside colleges like IISER, SIET, registered for the exam. 25 students attended the exam following the guidelines issued by the Govt. during pandemic.
Department of Physics, C.T.T.E College for Women organised a webinar on “Science for and with Society in Dealing with the Global Pandemic” on November 13, 2020. The session was handled by Dr.P. Seenuvasakumaran, Associate Professor, ResearchDepartment of Physics, Muthurangam Govt Arts College, Vellore. The webinar aimed at creating awareness on the critical role of science and technology in addressing the global challenge – COVID -19. The session provided an insight on the brief history of coronavirus, its occurrence, transmission and control. The speaker also shared information on the recent researches taking place in the development of vaccines which can curb the further spread of the deadly virus. The webinar was conducted through g meet and was streamed live in Youtube. Nearly 120 participants from various city colleges benefited from this webinar.
Department of Physics celebrated World Science day on November 10, 2020 through G meet. The programme highlighted the role of science and technology in daily life. The student coordinator Aysha.M, III B.Sc Physics in her introductory speech, emphasized the significance of celebrating World Science Day and briefed on the theme “ Science for and with Society in dealing with the global pandemic.” The motivational videos of Sir C.V Raman and Madam Marie Curie were screened. Dr.R. Meenakshi, the Head of the Department elaborated on the role of students in the development and progression of research in the field of science and technology and motivated for better research applying innovative ideas. The students prepared ppt and shared their knowledge on the role of science for peace and development.
World Space Week is globally celebrated each year from Oct 4-10 as a tribute to Space science and Technology, for the role they played in the betterment of human life on Earth. As a part of this World Space Week celebration, the Department of Physics created interest among the students about space, the benefits received from space science and technology, through various activities on October 10, 2020. Ms. Aysha.M, Student Coordinator of Physics Club “Radiations” delivered an introductory speech on the significance of World Space Week celebration and the theme chosen for the year 2020. A video on “Outer space” was projected to fascinate the young minds on the progress made in space research since the launch of the first man made satellite, Sputnik-I. Students exhibited their e-posters on “Understanding the Universe”.
Department of Physics celebrated Teacher’s day on September 5, 2020. The online celebration amidst the covid -19 pandemic constraints, had not dampened the enthusiasm of students. The programme was led by Ms. Muthulakshmi.S, IIIB.Sc. Physics. On the occasion, students expressed their gratitude to teachers by playing a video. Students also presented speeches and poems honouring the role of a teacher in one’s life. Dr. R. Meenakshi, Head, Department of Physics concluded the programme by thanking the students for making the day memorable.
Department of Physics celebrated Founder’s Day on September 5, 2020 through google meet, to pay tribute to our late founder Dr. Elizabeth Thomas. A video was screened to reflect on the journey of the institution in realizing the dreams of our founder. Ms. Jenifer of III B.Sc. Physics, delivered a speech on the life history of the great founder, who worked with a vision of empowering women through education.
Department of Physics, C.T.T.E College for Women organized a webinar on “Futuristic Warfare” on June 20, 2020. The resource person of the day, Dr. Latha Christie, Senior Scientist & Associate Director, DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Bangalore spoke on the role of technology in shaping warfare. The use of infectious agents like bacteria, virus etc., with the intent to kill or incapacitate humans, animals or plants as an act of war was highlighted in her speech. The session also focussed on developments in unmanned systems, AI, robotics, data processing, autonomy, networking in changing the warfare regime. The programme was conducted through google meet and YouTube live stream. About 120 participants from different institutions of the country benefited from the programme.
COLLAGE
Department of Physics conducted collage making competition to commemorate the birth anniversary of English Physicist and Mathematician Sir Isaac Newton on January 4, 2021. “Discoveries of Sir Isaac Newton” was the theme chosen. The objective of the competition was to make the students aware of Newton’s discoveries in Optics, Motion and Mathematics which created a scientific revolution in 17th century. Nearly 10 students participated and the winners were judged based on their creativity, originality and adherence to the theme.
ORATORICAL COMPETITION
Department of Physics celebrated the birth anniversary of Sir C.V Raman, the only Indian Scientist to win the Nobel Prize in Physics, on Nov 7, 2020. On the occasion of this virtual celebration, an oratorical competition on “Latest technologies in Physics” was conducted. The objective of the competition was to enable students to know about the latest developments in the fields of science and technology. The students shared various fascinating technological developments in the field of nano technology, lasers, super conductors, advanced materials etc. Nearly 8 students registered for the competition.
INTER DEPARTMENT COMPETITIONS
Department of Physics celebrated the 89th birth anniversary of Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, the great scientist who inspired millions of people through his lectures and achievements, on Oct 15, 2020 through g meet. A video filmed by the students of III B.Sc. Physics was screened. The video carried the message of perceiving failure as the first attempt in Learning. The journey of the inspirational leader from an ordinary child who sold newspapers, sow the seeds of hard work in young minds to reap the fruits of success. As a part of the online celebration, to instil scientific interest in students, the department conducted competitions like Poem writing, Debate and Video making. The Poem on “My dear Earth” reflected the creativity of students and expressed their sense of gratitude to mother Earth. To encourage the young minds to voice out their views on space exploration, a debate on “Are space missions a wastage of resources for developing countries” was conducted. This battle of words deepened students’ understanding of the pros and cons of spending much resources on space explorations. The video making contest on “Science in Nature” provided an opportunity for the students to appreciate nature by exploring the science in everything that surrounds us. Nearly 25 students from the Departments of Mathematics, Chemistry and Computer Science participated in the competitions.
POWERPOINT PRESENTATION
Department of Physics conducted an online PowerPoint Presentation competition on September 22, 2020. The competition aimed at developing scientific attitude among the students by appreciating the contributions made by the scientist community to improve the standard of human life. “Michael Faraday- Achievements and discoveries” was the topic assigned. Faraday was one of the greatest scientists of the 19th century, renowned for his contribution to the study of electrochemistry and electromagnetism.All the modern technologies that is being used in 21stcentury takes root from the discoveries of the man who rose with limitless curiosity, from a book- binder’s apprentice to one of the greatest scientists of all time. The life history, discoveriesand achievements of Faraday rekindled curiosity in young minds to make their own impressions to the benefit of mankind.11 students registered in the competition which was conducted through g meet.

As the global threat of COVID-19 continues, Physics students prepared an awareness Quiz on COVID – 19 to test the knowledge on the facts on the pandemic. The analysis shows that the respondents have adequate awareness for COVID‐19 outbreak and its preventive measures. To make all understand the importance of social distancing and other preventive measures prescribed by the government for Coronavirus, an awareness video was also prepared and shared among the present and outgone students, so that it can be useful to their family members also. Drawing and Posters were also made as part of the programme.
