We are honored to feature Catherine Twomey Fosnot as this year’s recipient of the Betsy Carter Memorial Award. Presented annually by the Connecticut Council of Leaders of Mathematics (CCLM), this award celebrates leaders who embody the spirit of Betsy Carter through exceptional leadership, lifelong learning, and a steadfast commitment to excellence in mathematics education.

Throughout her distinguished career, Cathy has reshaped how educators approach math instruction through inquiry, child-centered thinking, and deep conceptual understanding. As Professor Emerita of Education at the City College of New York and founder of Mathematics in the City—a national center for professional development—she has consistently epitomized a growth mindset and a passion for supporting both teachers and students.

A prolific author and curriculum leader, Cathy has published over 70 books and instructional materials, including the groundbreaking Young Mathematicians at Work series and Contexts for Learning Mathematics. Following her retirement from CCNY in 2012, she founded New Perspectives on Learning to focus on systemic school change, recently developing CFLM into a full core program complete with 54 units, an online professional support system, and formative assessment tools.

Cathy’s ongoing work continues to inspire educators, advocate for excellence, and cultivate deep, equitable learning for students across Connecticut and around the world. We are pleased to celebrate Cathy and her outstanding contributions and well-deserved recognition.
