AAHS Science Club Meetings, 2016-2017

General Club Membership Meetings:

To be considered a Science Club member in good standing, a student is expected to attend 85% of the general club membership meetings (that is 11 out of 13 meetings).

  • Meeting #1: Thursday, September 29, 11:00 Agenda: Welcome from Executive Board, Demo Den run by guest senior, Bret Silverstein - the science of a "supersonic ping-pong ball" and a Vacuum Cannon of his own construction.

  • Meeting #2: Thursday, October 06, 11:00 Chair: Shihab Rahman, Jackie Fezza, Anvitha Sathya. Agenda: Officers explained the goals of the Science Club. Recorder Nick Moscardelli and Club Historian Eoin O'Hare introduced themselves and explained their roles. Andrew Dressner described NJ Makers' Day. He is the NJ Makers' Day chairperson for our community outreach program.

  • Meeting #3: Thursday, October 20, 11:00 Chair: Jackie Fezza. Agenda: Specific Heat Capacity of water influences the burning of a balloon filled with water. A dollar bill goes up in flames but doesn't burn!!

  • Meeting #4: Thursday, November 3, 11:00 Chair: Nikki Tirrell. Agenda: Surface Tension and cohesion - Create a bubble within a bubble

  • Meeting #5: Thursday, November 17, 11:00 Chair: Shihab Rahman Agenda: Let's Make Ice Cream!!! Observe the power of freezing point depression, a colligative property.

  • Meeting #6: Thursday, December 01, 11:00 Chair: Anvitha Sathya. Agenda: Properties of a Fluid - Laminar Flow and Bernoulli's Principle Demonstrations

  • Meeting #7: Thursday, December 15, 11:00 Chair: Eoin & Nick Agenda: Pressure

  • Meeting #8: Thursday, January 5, 2017, 11:00 Chair: Andrew D. Agenda: Heat Energy transfer. Did you know that nitrocellulose ping pong balls can catch on fire? Use the heat from an ethanol combustion reaction to cleanly break the bottom of a glass bottle.

  • Meeting #9: Thursday, February 16, 11:00 Chair: Andrew & Eoin Agenda: Current Electricity - Electrocute a Pickle, Use a Tesla coil to charge a spectral tube and a hand held fluorescent light bulb. The maximum number of people that can conduct electricity and still light the fluorescent bulb is three!

  • Meeting #10: Thursday, March 30, 11:00 Chair: Jackie Agenda: Make your own Bubble Snakes!! What's a bubble?

  • Meeting #11: Thursday, April 20, 11:00 Chair: Anvitha Agenda: Periodic Table Challenge Puzzle - group game with prizes!!

  • Meeting #12: Thursday, May 04, 11:00 Chair: Shihab Agenda: Static Electricity, the static properties of a cornstarch/oil emulsion and observations of a Van de Graaf Generator. What is "breakdown voltage"?

  • Meeting #13: Thursday, May 18, 11:00 Chair: Ms.Reilly Agenda: Thank you for participation throughout the year. Certificates for BioOlympiad and NJ Makers' Day participation were distributed. Acknowledgement of our senior membership graduating. We thank them for their leadership throughout the years. Challenge was given: How do we want to define ourselves in the upcoming year? Do we have a responsibility to spread the concerns of the science community in our school community? For example: Climate change, recycling, antibiotic resistance and vaccine use... other ideas? Do you want to participate in science competitions and community service opportunities? Think about it over the summer and come back refreshed and ready to evolve as a club!!

  • The Open Exam will be administered Tuesday, February 14, 2017 during 1st period. All interested students are eligible. Please register here. Scroll to the bottom of the webpage and register under Monmouth County Academy of Allied Health and Science.

  • We are happy to report that our AAHS Semifinalist was freshmen Brian DaShore!!!! He completed the two hour competition exam after school on 3/29/2017

Community Service:

  • "Caregiver Retreat" - Saturday, November 19, 2017 - 9am to 2 pm - sponsored by the Monmouth County Office on Aging - Science Club & AAHS Junior Community Course sponsored a table about ways to counter stress for the caregiver. Jackie F.(12) and Mayuri R.(11) represented the Science Club's participation.

  • "Allied in Action" - Tuesday, February 7, 2017 - 6pm to 7 pm Science Club Demonstrations and Table Display in celebration of Career & Technical Education Month

  • NJ Makers' Day - Saturday, March 25, 2017 - 10:30 am to 3:15 pm Chair: Mr. A. Dressner

  • NHS/Science Club - co-sponsored "Science Activities in the Lab" Saturday, April, 29 - 10:00 am to 1:00 pm - for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. Chair: Nikki T.
