Conemaugh Township Elementary
Instructional Support Team
What is IST?
The Instructional Support Team (IST) is a process to help provide support to students experiencing academic or behavioral difficulties in school.
Who are the IST Team members?
The IST team typically consists of, but is not limited to: the Parents/Guardians, Classroom Teacher(s), Title I Reading Teacher, Elementary Counselor and IST Support Teacher. Sometimes the REACH Counselor, School Psychologist, Principal or School Nurse may also participate. Parents/Guardians are welcome to invite other family members or agency staff working with their child to participate (ex. Grandparents, Behavior Consultant, Family-Based Therapists).
How does it work?
The IST team addresses concerns by reviewing the student’s strengths, collecting data, and creating both home and classroom interventions to help the student be successful. The team sets goals and then periodically meets to review the student's progress. The team may also make referrals to outside agencies, or recommend a higher level of support such as a 504 plan or educational testing for an Individualized Education Plan.
How do I involve my child?
Your child’s teacher may reach out to you first if they have concerns. If you feel your child is in need of academic or behavioral help, the first step is to contact your child's teacher to address your concerns. Parents and teachers will conference first prior to an IST referral being made.
When and where are the IST meetings held?
IST meetings are held at the Elementary School in person, or by phone conference. Meetings typically last 30 minutes and are held at 8:30 - 9:00 am or 3:30 -4:00 pm to ensure all relevant staff members may participate.
