ISTE Standards: 1.3 - Knowledge Constructor "Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.", including 1.3a - Effective Research Strategies, 1.3b - Evaluate Information, 1.3c - Curate Information, and 1.3d - Explore Real World Issues (Iste, 2023).
The role of credibility in research is paramount, and students often do not take that into consideration when they are utilizing resources for projects or papers. Students often don't realize the role of bias in research or websites, taking information at face value without looking into the purpose of the statements. It's incredibly important that students recognize that their points are not proven if the information they use to support it is coming from a disingenuous source.
This JIT lesson related to this concern is focused on recognizing credible sources and discussing when and why a source should be used. The conversation focuses on how to identify bias in a resource related to funding, ideologies, relationships to other sources, etc., as well as the importance of eliminating bias from your sources. These conversations relate the value of identifying "truth" from persuasive rhetoric and bring in the fact that your point is invalid if your sources are not credible. The graphic serves to provide reminders and a quick check-in regarding identifying the credibility of a source as your are finding them during a project.
