The marine gastropod Tritonia deomedea is an invertebrate model organism. We obtain tissue samples from Professor James Murray (Department of Biological Sciences, CSUEB) who studies the neurobiology and behavior of this sea slug.
GST is a detoxification enzyme. The marine slug Tritonia diomedea can feed upon a toxic soft coral called Ptilosarcus gurneyi. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms within marine food chains graduate students were purifying and characterizing the GST enzyme from the slug's digestive gland. Sam Cooney, Miguel Garcia and Shuang Huang completed their master theses on this project:

AChE terminates cholinergic signaling by cleaving the neurotransmitter acetylcholine into choline and acetate. The characterization of AChE is important, since Tritonia diomedea is an invertebrate model for studying the neuronal basis of behavior. Several graduate students were involved in this project.
