Leccio
Leccio
The Leccio (pronounced as Lesho), is a Lenten cantillation deeply rooted in Catholic liturgy yet transformed through Ibanag devotion. Once derived from the Latin Lamentations of Jeremiah, it has evolved into the “Vinunga onu Tangi-tangi ni Santa Maria” — the lamentations of the Virgin Mary over the suffering and death of her son, Jesus Christ. Its variations in tune and text across communities reflect the living nature of oral tradition, while its performance during Holy Week connects generations in shared remembrance and faith.
Note on the Leccio
The inclusion of the Leccio is envisioned as part of the next steps of the project. As a living repository, the initiative continues to grow, and the Leccio will be highlighted in future phases to further enrich the documentation of Ibanag prayer chants and their ritual connections.
Please refer to the copy of the Leccio below provided by Mr. Benjar Correo of Gosi Sur, Tuguegarao City, custodian of the Leccio book.
Acquimallo
The Acquimallo is a solemn funeral chant led by a knowledgeable elder, the minakkanta. Once sung throughout the nights of mourning, it continues today as a prayer of remembrance during vigils, novenas, anniversaries, and even Good Friday. Its repetitive cadence carries the weight of grief and the strength of communal solidarity, reminding families that sorrow is shared and faith endures.
