Our writing consultants provide valuable one-on-one consultations and support in academic and professional writing. Consultants work with undergraduate and graduate students from all CSS programs, of all skill levels, and at any point in their projects.

Position Description
Purpose/Description
Work with students to help develop writing and critical thinking skills. Work typically involves collaboration with students on specific writing assignments, including—but not limited to—essays, research papers, and literature reviews.
Job Duties
Establish personal contact and rapport with students while being identified as an academic resource and role model.
Facilitate conversations with peers as one-on-one conversations between the consultant and student. Guide, suggest, and encourage the development of the writing process and skills.
Review written work, compare it to assignment prompts, and provide thoughtful, appropriate feedback and prompts for clarity, critical thinking, and argumentation.
Provide feedback on proper citation methods.
Create a welcoming and academic environment for students.
Attend all training sessions, team meetings, meetings with staff, programming events, mandatory in-services, and any special retreats or events as requested by your supervisor; these take priority over all other non-academic commitments.
Identify individual learning styles and adjust styles accordingly.
Refer students to specific campus departments as needed.
Keep regular and accurate records of sessions.
Promote awareness of individual responsibilities for academic success, including but not limited to, assisting students of all academic abilities with various academic concerns, writing and critical thinking skill improvement, time management, and faculty contact.
Understand and abide by College and program policies and procedures as a role model.
Follow detailed procedures and requirements as assigned by your supervisor.
Bring students of concern to your supervisor’s attention and, when appropriate, work with the staff to resolve the concerns.
Maintain regular communication with their supervisor.
During paid hours, students will work on projects as assigned by their supervisor.
Required Qualifications
Must be a CSS student.
Sophomore status by Fall 2024.
Completion of First-Year Composition (or equivalent) with an “A” or “A-.”
Possess strong written and verbal communication and critical thinking skills.
Ability to interact with a wide variety of people in a friendly, professional manner.
Ability to live within the Student Code of Conduct.
Proven record of responsible decisions, punctuality, self-motivation, and organizational skills.
Competence working with Google Documents, Gmail, Excel, Microsoft Word, and other software applications.
Preferred Qualifications
English or Education major (or minor).
Prior tutoring experience.
Ability to work a flexible schedule.
Above a 3.5 cumulative GPA.
APA and MLA competency.

The Rose Warner Writing and Critical Thinking Center supports students in becoming better writers and critical thinkers through collaborative feedback on all forms of writing.
Consultants in the Writing Center provide one-on-one sessions in writing support and tutoring. Consultants work with undergraduate and graduate students from all St. Scholastica’s programs — of all skill levels, and at any point in their projects. Accordingly, consultants are expected to have a strong background in writing and enjoy working with writers across various levels.
To be considered for a position in the Writing Center, you must:
Be a full-time student at the College of St. Scholastica
Have sophomore standing or higher
Be eligible for campus employment (any questions about campus employment can be addressed to the financial aid office in Tower Hall 1118)

Letter of interest addressing why you are interested in being a writing consultant and any special skills, strengths, experiences, or perspectives you can bring to the Writing Center
Resume/CV
Letter of recommendation (ideally from a professor or instructor familiar with your work)
2 samples of collegiate-level writing, totaling no more than 20 pages.
When your application has been received, the Director of Academic Support and the Director of the Writing Center will review your application and supporting materials. They will contact you via CSS email to address the next steps in the process.
