This session is a discussion of the challenges that non-traditional students face when returning to school and enrolling in writing-intensive classes. Their (re)introduction to academic writing raises many questions and challenges. How can we support them in writing well and stressing less about it? How can we support faculty processes, especially in giving feedback on writing assignments?

We have all had those days when, despite our best efforts, we simply cannot get students to engage in our classroom discussions and activities. Nothing but silence! A big part of successful engagement comes from foundations that are set before we give an assignment to students. This session will focus on strategies we can use to engage students before and during their reading, viewing, and listening so that they are prepared to engage in classroom discussions and learning activities.
