What’s New in Second Grade
We are excited to share our newsletter with you! In May, we celebrated our STREAM project, learned about telling time, participated in the Heifer Walk, and so much more! The second graders have been working very hard to brainstorm ideas for their new writing project, which focuses on "small moments" in their lives. Students have also been eager to dive into our final social studies unit, New York City Boroughs and Landmarks. We are looking forward to all they will accomplish in the final few weeks of second grade!
ASK ME:
Reading
What are the four types of poems we have focused on? (Couplet, shape, acrostic, and diamond)
What are the different ways we can make the long o sound? (O, o-e, oa, oe, ow)
Writing
What is the difference between a watermelon topic and a seed topic? (Watermelon topics talk about a big event that happened; seed topics zoom in on one specific moment within the big event)
What is your idea for your "small moment" story? (Answers will vary)
Math
What is the difference between the hour hand and the minute hand? (The hour hand is short and the minute hand is long)
If I start doing my homework at 6:30 p.m., and it takes me 30 minutes to complete, what time will I finish? (7:00 p.m.)
Social Studies
What is one exciting place that you can visit in the borough of Manhattan? (Central Park, Times Square, Empire State Building, etc.)
What do New Yorkers sometimes refer to the Bronx as? Why? (Boogie Down Bronx because it was the birthplace of hip hop and breakdance)
PE
Gym
What part of our hands do we use to dribble a basketball? (Use your finger pads and have strong hands; No slapping at the ball)
How do we show our teammates that we are ready to catch the ball? (We make eye contact, say our teammate's name out loud, and put our hands are up in a broken "w" position, giving our teammate a target.)
What are three ways to get someone out in softball? (Catch a fly ball, tag them, step on the base before they get there)
Dance
What types of dance did you learn about that can tell stories? (Ballet, Musical Theater, and Kathak Dance)
Can you show me some of your dance to “One Short Day” from Wicked? (It may help to play the song from the Broadway cast of Wicked; it should begin with students acting out the words followed by a turn)
Can you show me the ballet gestures you learned? (Ballet gestures may include using a whole hand to point at yourself for "me," crossing wrists over heart for "love," three fingers up for "promise," hands under head for "sleep," and a whole hand wrist roll for "dancing")
MPR
What are four parts of personal fitness that we talked about in the MPR? (Strength, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, agility)
How does one improve their flexibility? (Holding stretches for prolonged periods of time)
What steps did we discuss for throwing a ball overhand (T, tail, step, and throw)
Swim
Can you demonstrate three warm-up activities for the pool? (Star jump, flutter kick, and bobs)
What are the three safe ways to jump into the pool? (Feet first in deep end, slide in, jump into pool off block when area is clear of people)
How do you go faster while swimming? Is it better to fight with the water or stay relaxed while swimming? (Stay relaxed, make arms long, hands like spoons not forks, do not forget to kick)
Technology
What do you call a mistake or an error in your code? (A bug)
Can you name one sensor on the Ozobot? (Color, line following, or proximity sensor)
Service Learning
How did a goat named Mugisa change the life of a family in Uganda? (Sales of Mugisa's milk and offspring helped to send Beatrice to school)
What is Heifer International? What do they do to try to help families all over the world? (An organization working to end hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth; they provide appropriate livestock, training, and related services to small-scale farmers and communities worldwide)
