Chest X-ray Analysis

Pneumonia is an inflammation that can affect one or both lungs and is caused by either bacteria, fungi or viruses and could even cause death. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Pneumonia causes 16% of child deaths in the world].  The COVID-19, which was confirmed as a global health crisis, also carries symptoms similar to Pneumonia. If diagnosed and treated early, Pneumonia can be managed well with the help of antibiotics, viral and fungal medicine and complications that can lead to death could also be safely avoided. The most common method of diagnosing Pneumonia is through Chest x-rays while various other tests like blood tests can also be of help. For detecting Pneumonia, one needs to examine the x-ray images carefully which requires expert knowledge and can be a time-consuming task.

Due to the huge gain in both accuracy and performance, deep learning techniques such as Convolution Neural Networks are now widely being used in medical image analysis research work. In this proposal, we will be proposing a medical image analysis framework to classify Pneumonia and COVID-19 conditions and to distinguish between the two using x-ray with the help of deep learning techniques.
