Teaching should be learner centered
Teaching should go from whole to part
Teaching should develop academic language and content
Teaching should be meaningful and purposeful
Teaching should include interactions to develop oral [signed] and written language
Teaching should support students’ languages and cultures
Teaching and assessment should reflect faith in the learner
Our themes: We take into consideration how the overall message of the texts we present to our students impact them. We use "Mirrors & Windows" approach with our students regardless of their levels. They read stories that reflects their culture and identity and stories where they view someone else's experiences. There are topics/themes that we study such as: prejudice, oppression, empathy, identity and opportunity. Using the 7 principles of ESL teaching, we have faith in our learners and know they can improve their language skills through reading and writing. Both ASL & English are to be used in all components of our BLA lessons.
4 Key Values
Pillar #1: Continuously interrogate our own biases to understand how they inform our teaching.
Pillar #2: Center black, Indigenous, and voices of color in literature
Pillar #3: Apply a critical literacy lens to our teaching practices
Pillar #4: Work in community with others, especially BIPOC
