¡Te damos la bienvenida a la clase de español como herencia! Todos ustedes tienen la ventaja de ser bilingües. Llegan a esta clase con la capacidad de comunicarse en dos idiomas, lo cual es una gran ventaja en nuestra sociedad global. El español es el segundo idioma más hablado en los Estados Unidos y es cada vez más importante en el mundo de los negocios.
Sin embargo, a pesar de las ventajas de ya hablar español e inglés, probablemente no han tenido muchas oportunidades para usar el español en un entorno académico o para leer y escribir en español. Este año, realizaremos distintas actividades con el objetivo de reforzar las habilidades lingüísticas que ya tienen, así como de mejorar sus habilidades de escritura, gramática y lectura. Además, aprenderemos más sobre la historia y la cultura de distintos países hispanohablantes. De esta manera, estarán mejor preparados para enfrentarse a los desafíos de un mundo multilingüe y multicultural.
Welcome to the Heritage Speakers Spanish class! You already have the advantage of being bilingual. You come to this class with the ability to communicate in two languages, which is a huge asset in today’s increasingly global society. Spanish is the second most used language in the United States and the ability to communicate in Spanish effectively is more and more important in the business, education, and government sectors. But despite the advantages of already speaking Spanish and English, you probably haven’t had many opportunities to read and write in Spanish in an academic setting.
This year we will be doing a variety of activities with the purpose of reinforcing the language skills you currently have, as well as improving your skills in reading and writing. We will also learn more about the history and culture of various countries in the Spanish-speaking world. In this way, you will become better prepared to face the challenges of a multilingual and multicultural world.
En esta clase, tendrás que adoptar una mentalidad de crecimiento. Esto es una creencia de que la inteligencia y las habilidades se pueden mejorar con trabajo duro. Recuerda que cometer errores en español es parte del proceso de aprendizaje. Todos vamos a cometer errores a medida que crecemos juntos.
In this class you will need to have a growth mindset. A growth mindset is a belief that intelligence and abilities can be developed through hard work. Making mistakes in Spanish is part of the learning process. We will all make mistakes as we grow together.
Leer en español es clave para el desarrollo de tus habilidades de escritura. Así como aprendiste español escuchándolo, para aprender a escribir en español necesitas leerlo. En esta clase, empezaremos con diez minutos de lectura libre todos los días. Además, leeremos novelas y cuentos cortos para tener acceso a tanto español escrito como sea posible. Es probable que no tengan mucha experiencia leyendo en español, ¡pero no hay problema! Todos tenemos distintos niveles de lectura. Por eso, está bien elegir un libro muy fácil para la lectura libre. También está bien cambiar de libros si no te gusta el que elegiste. ¡Leer siempre debería ser algo que se disfrute! Porque la lectura es un pasaporte a miles de aventuras. :)
Reading in Spanish is the key for your growth as a writer. Just like you learned to speak Spanish by hearing it spoken, in order to write in Spanish you need to see it written out. In this class, we will start with ten minutes of lectura libre every day. We will also read novels and short stories in order to see as much Spanish written out as possible. Even if you don’t have much experience with reading in Spanish, that’s okay! We are all at different reading levels. It’s okay to choose a very easy book for lectura libre. And it’s also okay to switch books if you don’t like the one you chose. Reading should be enjoyable! Reading is a passport to countless adventures. :)

Soy de Guatemala y me mudé con mi familia a Los Ángeles, California cuando tenía 10 años. En mi tiempo libre, disfruto viajar, leer y pasar tiempo con mi familia y mis dos mascotas, Trixie y Louie.

Hola queridas familias de la secundaria Centennial,
Mi nombre es Jessica Orellana Lima, y les quisiera dar la bienvenida para este año escolar entregando información sobre mí , las expectativas de clase e información de contacto para que su estudiante tenga éxito en su desarrollo emocional y académico en esta nueva etapa educativa en Centennial High School. En primer lugar, todos en la escuela me conocen como la maestra Orellana.
Soy de Guatemala y llegué a los Estados Unidos cuando tenía diez años. Crecí en la ciudad de Los Angeles, California. Asistí al colegio comunitario, Los Angeles Trade Tech Community College donde estudié diseño y negocios y trabajé en la industria de ventas y diseño por varios años. Recibí mi licenciatura en estudios internacionales y educación bilingüe en la universidad estatal Humboldt en el norte de California. Tengo dos títulos de maestría. Uno en Filología y Literatura Latinoamericana y otro en educación para estudiantes de español como herencia. Estudié en la Universidad de Oregon y en la Universidad de Portland.
Dada mi experiencia como maestra de español, latina e inmigrante conozco las barreras y dificultades que enfrenta la comunidad latina en el proceso de adaptarse a una nueva cultura y de convertirse en una persona bilingüe y bicultural.
En relación a mis clases, todos los estudiantes son artistas en diversas formas y todos tendrán la oportunidad de descubrir, desarrollar sus habilidades lingüísticas, pero también crear un sentido de comunidad y reconocimiento de que estamos unidos en nuestra diversidad. El año escolar está compuesto por 5 unidades que son, a saber:
1. Yo Soy: Unidad centrada en reconocer y valorar la cultura de cada estudiante y su familia brindan a nuestra comunidad. Nos centramos en conocernos y crear el espíritu de comunidad por medio de nuestros dialectos, idiomas, tradiciones y cultura en general.
2. Identidad y literatura: La segunda unidad está centrada en aprender y desarrollar los estándares de SLA (Spanish language Arts) pero centrada en textos latinoamericanos sobre diversos temas como el amor, identidad, familia, mitos y leyendas. Para finalizar, su estudiante creará un texto narrativo en nuestro taller de escritura creativa para presentarlo en nuestro festival de lectura a los niños del programa de Pre-Kinder.
3. ¿Qué y cómo nos informamos? En nuestra tercera unidad, su hijo/a desarrollará las habilidades para reconocer, analizar textos informativos. Además, esta unidad entrega las herramientas para identificar fake-news. Por último, los estudiantes crearán su propio texto informativo (Noticia, podcast, tutorial, etc.) en diversos formatos.
4. ¿Cómo nos convencen y persuaden? El objetivo de esta unidad es entregarles las herramientas lingüísticas y estructurales para comunicar con el propósito de convencer y persuadir a otros. Nuestro enfoque es la lectura de ensayos, analizar la publicidad presente en diversas plataformas y por último aprender a escribir un ensayo persuasivo.
5. Cine y Poesía: Poesía es el arte de describir las cosas y nuestra realidad usando la belleza de las palabras y el cine es el arte de narrar historias usando imágenes, música y sonidos. En esta unidad los estudiantes leerán y analizarán, tanto poemas latinoamericanos, como taller aprender a expresar su ideas, emociones por medio de video e imágenes propio del lenguaje cinematográfico.
Por último, como departamento de Lenguas y Cultura, creemos en que cada estudiante y sus familias son un aporte a nuestra comunidad. Nosotros, como maestros, estamos para potenciar las habilidades de cada estudiante en un ambiente seguro y de respeto entre todos sin importar su lenguaje, dialecto, religión o cultura.

Hello dear Centennial High School families,
My name is Jessica Orellana Lima, and I would like to welcome you to this school year by providing information about me, class expectations, and contact information so that your child can be successful in their emotional and academic development in this new educational stage in Centennial High School. First of all, everyone at school knows me as maestra Orellana.
I am from Guatemala and I came to the United States when I was ten years old. I grew up in the city of Los Angeles, California. I attended Los Angeles Trade Tech Community College where I studied design and business and worked in the sales and design industry for several years. I received my BA in International Studies and another in Spanish Education from Humboldt State University in Northern California. I hold two Master's degrees. One in Latin American Literature and another in education for Spanish for heritage speakers. I studied at the University of Oregon and the University of Portland.
Because of my experiences as a Spanish teacher, Latina, and immigrant, I know the barriers and difficulties that the Latino community faces in the process of adapting to a new culture and becoming a bilingual and bicultural person.
In my classes, all students are artists in various ways and all will have the opportunity to discover, and develop their language skills, but also create a sense of community and recognition that we are united in our diversity. The school year is made up of 5 units that are, namely:
1. Yo Soy/ I am: Unit focused on recognizing and valuing the culture of each student and their family that they provide to our community. We focus on getting to know each other and creating the spirit of community through our dialects, languages, traditions and culture in general.
2. Identidad y literatura/Identity and Literature: The second unit is focused on learning and developing the SLA (Spanish language Arts) standards but focused on Latin American texts on various topics such as love, identity, family, myths and legends. Finally, your child will create a narrative text in our creative writing workshop to present at our reading festival for the children of the Pre-Kindergarten program.
3. ¿Qué y cómo nos informamos? /What and how do we find out? In our third unit, your child will develop the skills to recognize and analyze informational texts. In addition, this unit provides the tools to identify fake news. Finally, students will create their own informative text (News, podcast, tutorial, etc.) in various formats.
4. ¿Cómo nos convencen y persuaden?/How are we convinced and persuaded? The objective of this unit is to provide them with the linguistic and structural tools to communicate with the purpose of convincing and persuading others. Our focus is reading essays, analyzing the advertising present on various platforms and finally learning to write a persuasive essay.
5. Cine y Poesía/ Cinema and Poetry: Poetry is the art of describing things and our reality using the beauty of words and cinema is the art of telling stories using images, music and sounds. In this unit, students will read and analyze both Latin American poems, as well as a workshop, learning to express their ideas, and emotions through video and images typical of cinematographic language.
Lastly, as the Department of Languages and Culture, we believe that each student and their families are a contribution to our community. We, as teachers, are here to promote the skills of each student in a safe and respectful environment among all regardless of their language, dialect, religion or culture.

AMBIENTE DE AULA Y COMUNIDAD
Nuestra comunidad en Centennial se destaca y se siente orgullosa de su diversidad. Cada familia trae consigo un bagaje cultural y de experiencias que enriquece nuestra aula. Lo anterior, no sería posible sin el respeto y la valoración que cada uno de nuestros estudiantes desarrolla en nuestra escuela Centennial. Nuestro objetivo como comunidad escolar es asegurarnos de que cada individuo sea escuchado y atendido. Para hacer esto en nuestra clase, tenemos círculos comunitarios, pregunta del día para conocernos mejor cada día, Juegos grupales o en parejas sobre conceptos de la clase, o conocimiento cultural donde los jovenes pueden compartir sus pensamientos sobre la vida dentro y fuera de la escuela. Además, aprendemos sobre las expectativas del salón de clases y las reglas escolares, que incluyen:
- Estar a salvo
- Sé respetuoso.
- Sé responsable.
- Usar español, inglés o cualquier otro dialecto o idioma para compartir e investigar para luego desarrollar mi español.
- Sentirme orgulloso de mi mismo.
Para guiar a los estudiantes a seguir las reglas:
Usamos una rutina y expectativas todos los días en el salón de clases en palabras e imágenes para desarrollar el bilingüismo en nuestra clase. Nos comunicamos positivamente con los estudiantes para ayudarlos a resolver problemas cuando tienen dificultades.
Nos pondremos en contacto con los padres para colaborar y apoyar a los estudiantes para un refuerzo positivo si los estudiantes tienen un día difícil en la escuela.

CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITY
Our Centennial community stands out and is proud of its diversity. Each family brings with it a cultural baggage and experiences that enriches our classroom. This would not be possible without the respect and appreciation that each of our students develops at our
school. Our goal as a school community is to make sure that every individual is heard and cared for. To do this in our class, we have community circles, questions of the day to get to know each other better each day, group or pair games about classroom concepts, or cultural awareness where students can share their thoughts about life inside and outside of the school. In addition, we learn about classroom expectations and school rules, including:
- Be safe
- Be respectful.
- Be responsible.
- Use Spanish, English or any other dialect or language to share and research to later develop my Spanish.
- Feel proud of myself.
To guide students to follow the rules:
We use a routine and expectations every day in the classroom in words and pictures to build bilingualism in our class. We communicate positively with students to help them solve problems when they are having difficulties. We will reach out to parents to collaborate and support students for positive reinforcement if students have a difficult day at school.

This class aims to help you preserve your heritage language as well as the traditions and cultural knowledge of your family.
