In Year 11, students consolidate and extend the interconnected mathematical knowledge and skills built up over previous years, applying them to increasingly complex and sophisticated problems. Rather than simply practising routine procedures, students are encouraged to think carefully about which mathematical concepts and techniques are most appropriate in different contexts. Our aim is to develop confident, resilient problem solvers who are willing to explore different approaches, learn from mistakes and appreciate the reasoning and processes involved in reaching a solution.

Throughout the year, students will encounter an increasing number of GCSE-style examination questions, enabling them to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence required for success in their GCSE examinations. There is a strong emphasis on exam technique, including avoiding common errors and misconceptions, presenting clear mathematical working, checking answers effectively, using a scientific calculator efficiently, interpreting command words accurately and tackling longer, multi-step worded problems. As the year progresses, teaching will increasingly focus on targeted revision, exam practice and addressing individual gaps in knowledge, ensuring students are fully prepared for their GCSE examinations in the summer.

Students following Flight Path 1 are working towards the highest GCSE grades and, where appropriate, will be given additional challenge beyond the GCSE specification. Students who are securely achieving Grade 8 or 9 will continue to study the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics as an additional enrichment qualification, alongside their GCSE preparation. This provides an excellent bridge to A Level Mathematics and A Level Further Mathematics by developing deeper mathematical reasoning and exposing students to more advanced concepts while continuing to strengthen their GCSE foundations.
