The historic Cashtown Inn (ca. 1797) served as the first stagecoach stop on the new “turnpike” into Gettysburg. Thousands of Confederate soldiers paused at this inn before descending the hillside into town for—unbeknownst to them—a battle that would change all of us. We will have lunch here on Saturday.
When General John Reynolds raced into Gettysburg, little did he know it would be his last ride. Only when he’d fallen off his stallion did his men find the locket around his neck, revealing his secret engagement. We’ll see where he fell on McPherson’s Ridge where the battle began. Battlefields feel a bit sterile until you learn the stories.
After we climb up our way up the tight and twisting wooden staircase of the old Lutheran Seminary to emerge onto the historic cupola, you will know why soldiers—both Confederate and Union—sought this cherished vantage point. If this iconic old building could only tell us its stories.
Just four months after the battle, President Lincoln gave the most famous speech in American history. We will stand among the fallen to think about the cost of freedom and the great values that are dear to us.
Few places can match the glory of Gettysburg in the fall. Thirty years after the battle, Medal of Honor recipient Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain predicted generation after generation will journey here, “heart-drawn to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for them.” His prediction has come true: Gettysburg is indeed an epic place and we hope you will experience it with us.
