Woodworking I:

This course covers the use of basic measuring tools, layout, and the fundamentals of woodworking with an emphasis on the correct and safe use of tools and machines. Students will learn to read drawings, create plans, complete mathematical calculations, use precision measuring tools, the processes of planning, drawing, and constructing basic wood products.

Prerequisite: None

First Project: Trivet (Hot Pad)

The trivet provides a low cost and useful way to experience manufacturing skills; the safe operation of the jointer, planer, table saw, miter saw, and drill press; and gain knowledge to help identify common wood species and common woodworking joinery

Second Project: Pen

The pen provides an opportunity to operate the drill press and lathe. It requires turning blanks and pressing the components of the pen together.

Third Project: Sign/Cutting Board

The sign/cutting board provides a choice and requires gluing stock together. It also provides opportunity to operate the bandsaw, sander, router, and incorporate technology in the form of either the CNC mill or laser engraver.

Fourth Project: Drafting/Building a Box

The box draft wraps the course up and prepared students to advance into the next woodworking course by draft a three dimensional box into a two dimensional drawing to show lengths and joints. This allows a parts list and calculation of board feet.

Woodworking II:

This course explores a greater variety of tool and machine usage along with more complex applications. Correct and safe use of equipment is emphasized as students develop technical knowledge and skills with design and build projects. Students have the opportunity to build specialized projects with their purchased materials.

Prerequisite: Woodworking and Teacher Recommendation

Woodworking II: Projects

Students are allowed to draft and build projects they are interested in building but they must purchase the materials used.
