Restorative Discipline Practices was developed for use in schools for the State of Texas by the UT school of social work and Dr. Gaye Lang with Texas Education Agency. There are many things that go into making practices "restorative". Here are a few short videos to learn more about this important practice and how it can improve classroom and campus climate and culture, improve discipline and behavior.
Marilyn Armour, Ph.D., defines restorative discipline as a relational approach to building
school climate and addressing student behavior.
The approach fosters belonging over exclusion, social engagement over control,
and meaningful accountability over punishment.
This school year has started off with 90 educators trained or refreshed in RDP! In June, we met with all 13 of our campus counselors to refine our skills and talk about how RDP can support counseling efforts.
On August 4th, we had 48 educators bring 588 years of experience to Crosby Elementary School to train their entire campus in RDP! Implementation of Tier 1 Community Building Circles will be happening in grades 1st - 3rd at CES this year with on campus support.
On August 8th, we had 243.5 years of experience among 29 educators at Crosby Middle School's 6th grade team! This group will be implementing Tier 1 Circles for our 6th grade students!

RDP is designed for use as a Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 intervention and is applicable for all students PreK - 12th grade. There are several components to making this practice "restorative" that are taught in the trainings.

One of my mentors is Dr. Gaye Lang with Texas Education Agency. She has provided some short videos that explain the RDP practice in schools and how it can be an important tool in our educator toolbox.
Check out video #5 - A Tool in the Toolbelt, which has educators sharing what the process was like for them!
This is an incredible accomplishment - to have Every campus Administrator, Counselor, LSSP, our Student Services Director, PASS teachers and staff, and ISS teachers complete Restorative Discipline Practices (RDP) training by the end of January for Tier 1, Community Building Circle practices and strategies! Our elementary and secondary educators all engaged in practicing the strategies and skills and participated in continued training through a Book Party, using two resources on RDP strategies and implementation.
