Welcome!
This is our page for me to share our HEY Strategies this year. The strategies are the same each month - Welcoming, Engaging Practice, and Optimistic Closure. I will share out with you some different ways to use these 3 Signature SEL Practices each month here on this page. We are going to start out slowly, and you can add more ways to implement the strategies as quickly as you would like! There are many to choose from!
I also have short videos of how to implement these 3 Signature SEL Strategies and make them part of your daily instructional routine. Remember - these strategies are not adding to your plate...this IS the plate!
Starting off with Inclusive Welcoming! This sets the tone for your classroom and helps build caring, trusting relationships with your students. Be intentional about welcoming your students and use the activities in the
3 Signature Practices Inclusive Welcome Playbook!

Highly engaging, effective and purposeful interactions are created using three key
practices in the small moments of our day:
WELCOMING ACTIVITIES • Greeting for Inclusion
ENGAGING PRACTICES • Attentive Listening
OPTIMISTIC CLOSURES • Reflections and Looking Forward
WELCOMING ACTIVITIES • Greeting for Inclusion: We all want to be acknowledged and welcomed.
A culture of personal greetings establishes safety and predictability, supports contribution by all voices, set norms for respectful listening, and allows people to connect with one another, creating a sense of belonging. To be effective they must be authentic, warm and accompanied by appropriate eye contact and attentive body language.
Simple Inclusive Greetings:
Eye contact when culturally appropriate when listening and speaking - not looking at your phone or computer when engaging with another person.
Smile :)
Quick greetings using the student's name.
Hi ______! Good morning/afternoon ______!
How can I help you today?
Nice to see you ________!
ENGAGING PRACTICES • Attentive Listening: Adults and students want to know that they have been heard and seen every day. Engaging practices such as attentive listening are brain compatible strategies that can foster relationships, cultural humility and responsiveness, empowerment, and collaboration. Attentive listening improves the quality of the thinking/speaking of the person who is talking and allows the listener time to understand the full message of what is being said or implied.
Simple Engaging Practices:
Nonverbal acknowledgement by head nod, wave, "air" high five.
Nonverbal cues by not using technology during a social encounter.
Pausing what you are doing to acknowledge someone else and giving your full intentional attention.
Asking open ended questions such as
What is new with you?
How are you doing in/with......?
Tell me about.....
OPTIMISTIC CLOSURES • Reflections and Looking Forward: This provides positive closure, reinforces the topic, and creates momentum towards taking action. It is a way to show that you want to stay connected with the person.
Simple Optimistic Closures:
Is there anything else I can help you with?
See you later!
Thanks so much.
Let me think about that.
Use these simple "three things" with your coworkers, students, and people you see in the neighborhood. When you read these, you may think it is silly, but watch others around you and see that these practices are needed in Cougar Nation and the world today.

Hey Cougar Educators!
I have put together the 3 Signature Practices Playbook into sections for us to focus on. The first is Inclusive Welcome! Let's take a quick look at this strategy and how you can incorporate it into your routine with your class or classes!
GAMES:
Four Corners Game from the 3 Signature Practices Inclusive Welcoming Strategies
Steps: Before the activity, mark four to five areas in the room with a large image, number, or word that corresponds to the choices you will be giving.
Ask participants to silently reflect on a statement or question prompt that is aligned to the content of the engagement. - Ask about what they would wish for and offer 4 type of choices - things they want, need, what others want or need, something for their future, something in the past, etc.
Share response choices with the group on a poster/slide (quotes, pictures, etc.).
Instruct participants to choose one of the responses, then ask them to move to that designated "corner" of the room, find a partner or trio within the group that forms in that area, and share what drew them to that choice.
NOTE: If you end up with a solo participant in a “corner,” join that person to hear their thoughts, using a timer to keep on track.
Debrief by inviting two or three participants to share their choice and rationale with the whole group (or one person from each “corner” area, if time permits). You may also ask what they notice about the size and composition of the groups and/or what SEL skills and competencies came into play during the activity.
MIX AND MINGLE Game from the 3 Signature Practices Inclusive Welcoming Strategies
Steps: On a card or half-sheet of paper, ask participants to write down a response to "If I could grant a wish to someone, I would wish for....." "If I could give someone anything, I would give a wish to (Name) because..." "If I had 3 wishes, I would wish for 1... 2.... 3..."
When you announce, "Mix and mingle!" and turn on music, participants move around.
When the music stops, participants find a partner near them. Help with pairing if needed.
Partners share their responses, listen actively to each other, and ask follow-up questions.
Start the music again and repeat the sequence with another partner or two, as time permits.
Debrief by asking one or more of these questions: What were some of the things you appreciate about doing this activity? What did you learn about yourself with this activity? What was challenging about it?
I know "Lunch and Learn"s may not be the best thing for everyone, but I am trying to use our time efficiently and effectively and that is one way that is available.
No worries if "Lunch and Learn" does not work for you - here is a video re-cap!
Please know that you can always hop on the Lunch and Learn to ask a question or get some information you need!! You don't have to stay the whole time :)
Please let me know if you need any help!
