This is an introductory course for learning to play the piano. No previous experience is necessary. Basic music theory skills will be introduced as needed in relation to student advancement at the keyboard. Due to the use of individual keyboards and workstations, students can enter the class at differeing levels of abilities and advance at their own pace.
This course is a continuation of Piano I. Piano technique is further developed, and the basics of music theory and harmony are emphasized. Piano I is a prerequisite or prior piano experience at the discretion of the teacher.
This is an introductory course for music technology. Students will discover and explore concepts used in music sequencing, notation, and recording. No prior music experience is required. Students will create music using garageband, synthesizers, and drum machines, while exploring a variety of genres.
This course is open to CHS students who have taken Music Technology I. Students will study advanced concepts using LogicPro and Garageband. Special emphasis will be placed on recording techniques, film scoring, and production.
This course integrates aspects of melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, form, musical analysis, and composition. Dictation, listening, and sight singing are an important part of the course. It is strongly recommended that students in AP Theory will have acquired at least basic performance skills in voice or on an instrument. Students can take the AP music theory exam in May.
Guitar is a performance-based technique class offering an introductory experience and development of fundamentals skills. Topics covered include: basic technique, tuning, instrument care, basic music theory skills, guitar tablature, chords, musical form, strumming a picking patterns/techniques, and performing as a soloist, with a partner, and as a full ensemble.
This course is for students interested in learning more about theater both on stage and off. This hands-on class will allow students to experiment with acting, directing, writing, performing, and producing a musical. Not only will they focus on general theater concepts, but their projects will contribute to the CHS Spring Musical. No prior experience is necessary.
This course is a semester course that explores the history and development of popular music from its roots to today’s chart-topping hits. Students will examine how pop music reflects culture, technology, and social change through listening, discussion, and hands-on activities. No prior music experience is required. This class is designed for all students who are curious about the music they hear every day and how it has evolved over time.
