Notice: Regular Monthly Meeting, Thursday October 2, 2025 6:30pm Talpa Community Center
This is a forest thinning project where we are looking for lineros from the community to thin out 1 acre parcels of forest assigned by La Serna Land Grant. We are looking for at least 50 people to sign up for this project. Lineros that participate will be able to keep the wood they cut and will be reimbursed for fuel and use of their equipment once their obligation to the project has been met; this is subject to the Mayordomo's approval. Most wood cut will be green and all trees need to be cut according to the US Forest Service and Land Grant Program Guidelines. There are no fees for participation or registration. Any community member is welcome and encouraged to register; you DO NOT need to be an heir of the land grant to participate. Please keep in mind that the work will be physically demanding and each participant is expected to complete their acre in order to be eligible for reimbursement.
How It Works:
Paper Application
Print, fill-out and sign the Linero Handbook and Registration Forms
Return to a La Serna Land Grant Representative: wood@cristobaldelaserna.org
Main Mayordomo: Norbert Ledoux 575-776-7086
Project Mayordomo: Daniel Maes
Project Mayordomo: Jose Mondragon
Project Administrative Assistant: Rose Mondragon
The main mayordomo will screen the linero's application.
The main mayordomo, at his discretion, will assign the linero a 1-acre lot of forest (on USFS land) to thin.
The main mayordomo will contact the linero to setup a meeting to show him/her where the assigned block is located and go over the general cutting guidelines set by the US Forest Service.
The main mayordomo will issue the linero a set of numbered US Forest Service wood cutting permits that are unique to this project and can only be used within the lineros assigned cutting area. Each linero initially receives permits for 5 cords worth of wood.
The linero can begin cutting at their own pace, keep in mind, permits expire June 10, 2025. Lineros are free to use the wood as they please: private sale, heating, etc.
Once the linero is finished thinning their block, he/she must contact a mayordomo to set up an inspection of their lot. The mayordomo inspects for compliance with the US Forest Service cutting guidelines unique to this project.
With the main mayordomos approval, the linero will receive a $300 reimbursement for fuel, equipment use, etc.
After completion of one block lineros may ask to be assigned another; there is no limit as long as blocks are being fully completed.
