Students will take a reading interest survey to help narrow down their self-selected reading selection before going into the library. These will be shared with the teacher to increase diversity, relationships, and funds of knowledge that support a multicultural classroom (Exploring Digital Literacy Practices in an Inclusive Classroom | Reading Rockets, n.d.).
Students will organize thoughts into a graphic organizer and prove their responses using text evidence. This provides content support to all learners and increases cohesive thought (Exploring Digital Literacy Practices in an Inclusive Classroom | Reading Rockets, n.d.).
The form of presentation allows for global communication tools to be practices in a real-world setting. The product and process allows for seamless transference between the thought, creation, and presentation process (Exploring Digital Literacy Practices in an Inclusive Classroom | Reading Rockets, n.d.).
Title of Unit and Brief Summary:
1. Self-Selected Novel: Students will spend time in the library identifying the genre and book of choice within their zpd level dictated by STAR leveling assessment.
2. Comprehension Strategy: Students will create a graphic organizer using the Vision Board table by compiling text evidence connected to the higher order questions. Students will silently read their self-selected book for a sustained forty minutes
3. Vision Board Collage: Students use google docs or slides to create a picture collage symbolic of each response to the higher level questions. The collage will be graded on a rubric and self-selected novel will be assessed using STAR assessment program.
Students who are engaged in work create inventions, build positive collaborative groups, and form new ideas (Sharma, 2023).
Engagement Explanation:
Book Survey- increase student interest, opens communication between peers, and drives purposeful learning.
Graphic Organizers- students who have clear thought process, build expression through organized communication and manipulate information for all learning styles.
Flip Grid- students present information through digital discussion, interactive video, and engaging peer collaboration.
Students who are communicating through post, discussions and reflections are signs of high engagement (Sharma, 2023).
Communication Explanation:
Book Survey: opens communication between peers to reflect on books, allows for teacher-student conferences, and increases activity cooperation.
Graphic Organizers: forces students to organize thoughts, build compete written communication and process new information.
Flip Grid: creates a real-world process of communication using technology.
Technology is beneficial when being used for creation, not for the consumption of knowledge (Sharma, 2023). This is important when we are looking at how to hold students accountable when using technology in the classroom. While it is nice to use one of the programs that allows teachers to monitor what students are doing online, they are often costly. I have experience using two different paid monitoring systems Classwize and Deledao which increase students' accountability and student-led learning. Campuses without a technology budget may struggle to afford monitoring software which means that teachers must be diligent about moving around the room, holding students accountable, and setting expectations.
Classwize is a digital platform that allows teachers to manage students' screens through text messages, forcing the closing and locking of screens. This program gives teachers the ability to check for on-task behavior while also monitoring collaboration, communication and co-creation (Sharma, 2023).
Deledao is a digital platform that allows teachers to manage students' screens through visual check list. This program gives teachers the ability to check for on-task behavior while also monitoring creation, collaboration and construction (Sharma, 2023).
Book Survey Global Connections: students who recognize that their opinion when shared constructively can empower others through their passion (Using Online Learning to Build Global Awareness | EdNews Daily, n.d.).
Graphic Organizers: students who write with organization and comprehension of a topic use real-world skills to address cultural, ethical, and religious beliefs (Using Online Learning to Build Global Awareness | EdNews Daily, n.d.). This skill allows students to become more diverse, open, and globally aware of their impact.
Flip Grid: students using real-time communication tools to present knowledge and share information with global awareness help to expand commuter business and trade (Using Online Learning to Build Global Awareness | EdNews Daily, n.d.). This real-world skill fuels modern-day society and can transfer into multiple careers supporting all student learners.
