Lesson Synopses:
Students are writing ten short constructed responses following the RACE strategy using "Remember the Titians" as the stimuli.
Teachers who plan purposefully evaluate the strategies to tailor the lesson for each student (Learning A-Z, 2022). These can be broken down into four main categories:
content
process
product
environment
Selecting instructional strategies should be based on learning style surveys and student interest inventories from the beginning of the year. This increases differentiation in your classroom and builds a more cohesive learning environment (Learning A-Z, 2022).
In classrooms where the majority of students have lessons tailored to diverse learners, educators will see a highly productive learning environment (Learning A-Z, 2022). Educators who map out lessons with purposeful direction increase extension, retention, and remediation (Learning A-Z, 2022).
Content:
Teachers should consider the objective of the lesson, build the design around how they will study the content ,and present the material (Learning A-Z, 2022).
Process:
Teachers are differentiating how students learn; through grouping complementary students in order to increase differentation (Learning A-Z, 2022).
Product:
Students are given choice in how the complete the assignment showing their knowledge. Authentic assessments have a naturally differentated ability (Learning A-Z, 2022).
Environment:
Positive learning environments effect learning. Seating, procedures, routines, and habits all lend themselves to successful differentiation (Learning A-Z, 2022).
Mrs. Lynch used the first two weeks of school to get to know her students. She continuously attempts to join extra circular fan groups of students' passions to watch them perform outside of the classroom and use this knowledge to match lessons and activities to the majority interest. Students enter a classroom with a new environmental theme that carries throughout the year and ties in with our content. Passion grows as we learn with the brain in mind and use developmentally friendly activities.
Students all have different learning needs and unlike the teacher in the cartoon, it is our job to meet those needs. Let's explore how best to differentiate assessments (Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast & Islands Differentiation Methods for Performance Assessment, n.d.).
Complexity of Resources- provides research and material with complexity
Example: Giving a multiple-level text for different level students.
Transfer of Knowledge and Skills- students are asked to complete tasks at their level.
Example: Students are asked to measure three-dimensional objects one may do a see-saw and another the climbing structure.
Pace and Structure- allow time schedules with expanded time, and structures that support learners.
Example: Provide a study carrel for easily distracted students.
Personal Revelance- students choose the subject but complete the assessment within the guidelines.

SAS is a free program tailored to individual students that can be used with embedded support for all your learners. This highly interactive multi-learning style focus online curriculum is meant to be used as a targeted extension or remediation tool for educators (Stern, 2015).
NoRedInk is a free program targeted to RLA standards which are designed to be used with all your learners. The program begins with interest surveys builds all questions and pulls reading materials from those individual results. Students are then led on a learning pathway with instantaneous feedback, tutorials, and gamified lessons (Stern, 2015).
TECHNOLOGY
Differentiated Instruction can be defined as the ability to group students on readiness to learn, skills, interests, and choice as well as "flexible" in grouping with purposefully planning (Stern, 2015). Technology has made differentiation easier to facilitate in classrooms as teachers can set up individual pathways of learning while supporting students' passion and increasing engagement (Stern, 2015). You can use technology for independent work, small group collaboration, and co-creation to build global skill sets that help students with real-world connections, or whole group gamified activities for review, extension, or reteaching all while meeting the mark of individualized education plans.
