I often get asked, " what and when should I do maintenance on my computer"? Well that depends on what operating system your running and how much your using your computer.
Apple Computers
Once a month or so, run
1. Disk Utility and then click on your "Hard Drive" and then "Repair Disk Permissions".
2. Software Update (upper left corner under apple)
3. Check your other programs are updated too (Microsoft Auto Update, Firefox, Acrobat Reader, etc.)
4. Do a full backup with either Time Machine or drag your Home folder to an external USB drive.
Windows 10 & 11
Once a month or so, run
1. Review your system's status in the control panel. See if there are System updates that need to be installed.
2. Run a full scan with your anit-virus and spyware software.
3. Do a full backup with either a 3rd party backup application or Windows built in "Backup" software to an external USB drive.
All Computers - update those web browser plugins.
I like Firefox's ability to check if the plug ins are up to date.
1. In Firefox, go to the pull down menu "Tools" and select "Add-ons".
2. Then click on the "Plugins" icon on the left side of the page.
3. On the op of the page, click on the link" Check to see if your plugins are up to date".
4. On the "Plugin Status" page any "Outdated Plugins" will be listed in red with an "Updated Now" button.
5. Update each plugin - by click on the link, downloading and installing the new plugin.
6. Restart Firefox and confirm all plugins are update by repeating this procedure.
